THE Rising Sun pub on Truro’s Mitchell Hill is to reopen to great fanfare on Saturday, September 5. Doors will open at 6pm, and Truro Male Choir will perform from 8.30pm.

The new landlords have been named as Darren Biggs and Claire Doughty, who run The Engine at Cripplesease near St Ives (and will continue to do so with the help of a management team), and recently completed a three-month term as interim landlords at The Old Quay in Devoran.

Fondly known as the Riser to its locals, the 200-year-old pub was run by chef-landlord Tom Hannon for 11 years before he stood down last year to spend more time with family.

The Punch Pubs tenancy then passed to Pip Lovelock in January 2026, but the pub closed in May 2026, and Punch began advertising for new long-term partners.

Darren and Claire told the Voice they had long been interested in The Rising Sun. “We considered it when Tom stood down, but had only just taken on The Engine,” said Claire. “When we heard the tenancy was up again, we thought, why not give it a whirl? We’re taking it on a temporary basis, but if it works out, we’d love to stay.”

“It’s a lovely pub – iconic even,” added chef Darren. “Over the years, Tom turned it into one of the best pub-restaurants in Truro. We’d like to get it back to that level.”

The couple will focus on drinks while developing the menu; punters can expect “pub classics done well, alongside dishes with the ‘wow’ factor”.

“The food side is massively important to us, but you can’t do good food without good service and good beer,” said Darren. “We want locals to be happy coming in for a pint, and guests coming in for a really good dining experience. It’s a balancing act.”
