CORNWALL’S flagship branch of TG Jones is to close in October, taking a city-centre post office with it.

Formerly WH Smith, TG Jones has confirmed Truro’s Pydar Street store will cease trading on Saturday, October 10 following a closing-down sale.

The post office, which joined the store in 2017, will close on Tuesday, October 6; Post Office Limited is currently seeking new premises.

WH Smith’s high street operation was acquired and rebranded by Modella Capital in 2025 . In July 2026, the High Court approved plans including up to 150 store closures in a bid to prevent insolvency.

A TG Jones spokesperson said: "As part of our work to secure the long-term future of TG Jones, we have confirmed our Truro store will close. We appreciate this will be disappointing news for our colleagues, customers and the local community. Our priority now is on supporting those affected colleagues while continuing to serve our customers until the store closes.”

Asked for the status of other Cornwall branches, the spokesperson said: “As it is an ongoing process with landlord negotiations set to continue until Wednesday (August 26), we don’t have a further list at the moment.”

Truro BID manager Alun Jones said: “We are disappointed to hear this news. We were hopeful TG Jones would continue trading. It’s a large store which has seen its own challenges in recent times following the loss of the Cornwall Council car park at the top of Pydar Street.

“We wish all staff speedy relation into new jobs, and are hopeful a new retailer will see this as an opportunity to join Truro’s great selection of national and independent stores.”

Mr Jones added: “It’s never easy to see a long-standing high street brand lose its stores. This reminds us that now more than ever, we need our local customers and visitors to shop on the high street in person, and to avoid online shopping where possible.”
