A PROGRAMME of Remembrance events will take place in Truro in October and November thanks to a partnership between Truro City Council, the Truro Branch of the Royal British Legion and Truro Cathedral.
The Poppy Appeal will be launched on Saturday, October 25 with a blessing ceremony in the Garden of Remembrance (on the lawn area at the east end of the cathedral) at 11.45am on Sunday, November 2.
Truro War Memorial in Boscawen Street will be at the heart of proceedings on Remembrance Sunday - November 9 – with the Act of Remembrance at 11am and a wreath-laying ceremony followed by a military parade from 2.30pm.
The parade will pause on Boscawen Street for a salute with the Lord-Lieutenant for Cornwall, Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho KCVO OBE, and will continue to High Cross to be joined by the Civic Procession for a Service of Remembrance at Truro Cathedral from 3.15pm.
On Armistice Day - Tuesday, November 11 - the Truro Branch of the Royal British Legion will lead a two-minute silence at 11am at the War Memorial to mark the ending of the First World War in 1918.
City mayor Cllr Chris Wells will participate in all events and will welcome dignitaries and military personnel to Truro ahead of the Remembrance commemorations. “The November Remembrance events are an opportunity for us all to remember the many people who have given their lives in the service of our country, and to honour their bravery and sacrifice,” he said.
“I feel very privileged to be able to represent the people of Truro and the City’s Councillors and staff on these important occasions. In this year when we have marked the 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Days, I hope as many people as possible will make a special effort to attend.”
