DEMONSTRATORS gathered in Truro city centre on Saturday to protest against the proposed introduction of digital ID cards. Activist and former politician Piers Corbyn travelled down from London to attend to attend as keynote speaker for a group of a few dozen people, who marched from the cathedral to Lemon Quay.

“If digital ID is imposed, it will take away all our freedoms and give mega corporations and those behind them total control over our money and our lives,” said Mr Corbyn. “That’s why we have to resist on a legal but also a practical front.”

Mr Corbyn urged those present to shop local using cash, and to support local farmers. He also called for supermarkets to cease using surveillance cameras and to hand over existing footage.

Event organiser Shelley Tasker claimed digital ID could be used to enforce war conscription. “During previous wars, ID cards were used for everything, such as food rations. If you say no to conscription, they could stop your banking – it’s the ultimate power.”
