CORNWALL’s MPs were among the minority today (September 11) when they voted to approve a bill seeking to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales — which was ultimately turned down.

This was the second reading for the bill, which sought to allow adults who are terminally ill — subject to safeguards and protections — the opportunity to request and be provided with assistance to end their own life.

It had initially received 314 votes to 291 in its favour from MPs, but was brought back to the Commons today after the Lords blocked it.

Today’s result saw 269 MPs vote for the bill, being just pipped to the post by those against at 286.
