PLANS to redevelop a community garden in Newquay have received a slight delay.

Work on the Crantock Street Community Garden was due to get underway in November but the committee has had to create a Community Interest Company to take out a lease on the land.

The much needed community garden makeover has been designed by award winning landscape gardener Kim Parish from Landscapes of Distinction, which involves levelling out the site and installing a planting scheme, benches and various planters.

Committee chairman Anna Jay said: “We are delighted to have applied for and secured up to £100,000 Community Infrastructure Levy funding via Cornwall Council. We have also received pots of funding from Newquay Town Council and Community Capacity Fund Cornwall which has funded community engagement and support with fees that have been incurred as part of the design and planning.

“We have been advised by Cornwall Council that in order to progress with the project, work needs to be done around planning permission as there is a process to see whether this is required or not, and we also need to take out a lease on the land, which is owned by Cornwall Council.

“In order to do this, we have created a Community Interest Company, so our volunteer group is now officially registered.

“All of this takes time and funds and whilst we were hoping to start work at the beginning of November, it seems unlikely that this will be achievable.

“However, we'll be ready to go as and when everything is in place and we have the go-ahead.”

Crantock Street Community Garden committee plans to bury a time capsule as part of the project, which will include an item from Newquay Fire Station as the former fire station used to occupy the site up until 1969.
