CONCERNS have been raised a social housing company plans to sell off more of its properties in the Newquay area.

Ocean Housing is consulting on its intention to sell 7, Trencreek Road as well as 99, Pendragon Crescent, which are both two bedroomed and currently empty.

It follows the social housing company selling off a proportion of its housing stock in Newquay area including properties at Beach View Close, Coronation Way, Leader Road and Cross Close, which was opposed due to the number of local families looking to find homes.

Ocean Housing says the properties at Pendragon Crescent and Trencreek Road are being sold due to the investment required to make the homes suitable for letting.

Newquay Town Council as well as Cornwall councillors Drew Creek and Kevin Towill are being consulted on Ocean’s latest plans to sell off properties in the town.

Cllr Creek believes Ocean should be investing money to ensure its housing stock is refurbished while Cllr Towill is seeking assurances the sale is the right way forward.

Mayor Cllr Creek said: “I am disappointed to see Ocean selling of this property in Pendragon Crescent.

“It seems to me that this property should be being brought up to standards to be able to help house local families that need properties such as this.

“I will be writing to Ocean Housing to request a meeting to discuss their forward strategy of home upgrades in Newquay.”

Cllr Towill added: “I have been informed about the sale of the Trencreek property over the Christmas period. I have concerns about the proposed sale.

“I want to talk to Ocean about the details of the proposed sale. My priority is to find out why Ocean plan to sell it and how the money will be reinvested to make the housing situation easier for local people. The information I receive will be dependent on whether I object to the sale or not.”

A sales and disposal advisor for Ocean Housing said: “Housing associations can sell homes from their existing housing stock. This is seen by Homes England as a legitimate means to generate income to enable investment in new affordable or existing homes.

“It is our intention to sell 7, Trencreek Road, Newquay which is a two-bed end terraced house, dating from 1937. It is currently empty.

“It is also our intention to sell 99 Pendragon Crescent, which is a two-bed mid terraced house, dating from 1980. It is currently empty.

“The properties are being sold due to the investment required to make the homes suitable for letting. We have given this decision careful consideration and have concluded that it is not economical for us to retain these properties and improve them to the required standard.

“The properties will be advertised for sale on the open market. The proceeds from the sale will contribute towards our investment into new affordable homes for Cornwall, as well as improving our existing ones.

“We have shared details with Cornwall Council colleagues, so they have an opportunity to consider purchasing it.”
