THERE were queues down Boscawen Street when celebrated children’s author Onjali Q Raúf visited Waterstones Truro this morning (Saturday, May 2) to sign copies of her work.

Her visit coincided with the final performances of The Boy at the Back of the Class - the stage adaptation of her best-selling novel - at the Hall for Cornwall, where it was viewed by pupils from primary schools from across the Duchy.

Waiting patiently to meet the author were nine-year-old Noah Kershaw and his mum, Katy, from Perranporth. “I’m excited,” he said, while Katy added: “It’s his favourite book – we have listened to it on Borrowbox [Cornwall Council’s online eBook and audiobook library service], and when we heard the signing was happening, we bought the book especially.”

Ms Raúf also met primary schoolchildren in West Cornwall during her trip, and headlined St Austell Festival of Children’s Literature two years ago. “Cornwall is absolutely glorious,” she said. “People are always so kind, generous and welcoming. I have been given so many cards and gifts – even pomegranates. There has been a lot of love.”

Waterstones bookseller Phill Drown said: “We’ve been excited for a long time to welcome Onjali here and support the play while it’s at the Hall for Cornwall. She brings great energy. It’s a long way for some people to come, but so many have joined the queue.”

Waterstones offers regular book signing events, with a May half-term special offering the opportunity to meet authors Tom Palmer, Julie Sykes and Justyn Edwards.

“We are always feel very lucky to have authors here - it’s great to offer readers the chance to have an amazing moment with them,” said Mr Drown.

Ms Raúf is also due to give a free talk at the Hall for Cornwall at 6pm, before the final performance of the show, in conversation with local author Emily Barr.
