A CORNISH skateboard legend was guest of honour at the official opening of a new Wheeled Sports Park on the Roseland Peninsula.

Olympic skateboarder and national champion Lola Tambling, who hails from Saltash, cut the ribbon on the new facility at Tregony Sports Ground, then signed autographs and posed for selfies with young fans. Tregony with Cuby Parish Council welcomed members of the community to the grand opening on November 1. Despite wet weather, there was a great turn out of children, young people and families, and a fun day was had by all with skateboarding demos, sessions with Coach Frank and street art.

Parish councillor Dorian Spackman said: “It’s fantastic. Everyone is going to get years and years of use out of this. It’s great to see so many young people getting so much enjoyment out of the park, and it sits so well alongside other valued community facilities. With a lifespan of 25 years or more, we’re sure it will be that way for a long time to come.”

Cllr Spackman thanked councillors past and present who had been involved in this project over the years, including Mark Greet, Mark Lytham, Esther Gray, Graham Laity, Joy Floyd-Norris, Stewart Matthews, Kevin Ashley, and parish clerk Mary Symons.

He continued: “Thanks also to Pierran Bishop for running the survey that started all of this during Covid times; to Cornwall Councillor Julian German for his unwavering support; and to Cornwall Council’s Shared Prosperity Fund for largely paying for the park. We are glad you love it.”

The new facility was part-funded with £93,199.50 investment from the UK government’s Shared Prosperity Fund, delivered through Cornwall Council’s Community Levelling Up Programme. The design was developed in consultation with local residents and built by skatepark specialists Maverick Industries.

The day concluded with the annual fireworks event staged by the Clockhouse Players.
