Nominations are invited for the 23rd Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Awards 2026. The awards were launched in 2003 by former Penzance mayor Brian Spiegelhalter to celebrate the work, achievements and contributions of local people to the community.
Brian’s son, Mark Spiegelhalter, said: “These awards celebrate the people who go the extra mile for others. It’s a wonderful way to honour my late father’s legacy while recognising the dedication and kindness that makes Penzance such a special place.”
Penzance Council is looking for public nominations for two awards: Citizen of the Year (aged 18 and over) and Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 18).
Nominations can be made by anyone living, working or studying in the parish of Penzance for a wide range of activities, including (but not limited to) community service, volunteering, charity work, outstanding achievements and local environmental action.
The final decision will be made by a panel including the town mayor and clerk and a representative of BJ Spiegelhalter & Son.
Penzance Council town clerk James Hardy said: “These awards are an opportunity to highlight the invaluable contribution of so many volunteers within our community, celebrating their roles as part of the Annual Mayor Choosing Ceremony. We hope to get a large number of nominations from across the parish.”
Once chosen, the winners will be invited to the Annual Council Meeting in May at St John's Hall, Penzance and will be presented with their awards by the Mayor of Penzance, followed by the Mayor’s Reception immediately after the ceremony.
The full awards criteria and nomination forms can be found on the Penzance Council website. Printed nomination forms are also available from the Penzance Council offices. The closing date for nominations is midnight on Tuesday, March 31.
