TRIBUTES have been paid to a founding member of Newquay Rowing Club who has died.

John Bawden passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 21, following a “brave battle” with cancer.

He has been involved with the club for more than 60 years as a rower, coxswain, secretary, treasurer, commodore and trustee of the gigs.

A spokesperson for Newquay Rowing Club said: “From the Scillies to the Serpentine from New York to North Quay starter, he’s been there and done it.

“A lifelong member whose knowledge and expertise of the gigs will be truly missed not just in Newquay but throughout the county. We send our condolences to family and friends during these difficult times.”
