NEWQUAY is ‘buzzing’ as the Boardmasters five-day surf and music festival gets underway.

Twenty thousand revellers are estimated to arrive today (Wednesday) via train, coach and car and more than 20,000 on Thursday.

They have been settling in at the Boardmasters campsite at Watergate Bay ahead of the music festival, which boasts headline acts including Raye, Central Cee and the Prodigy.

People have also been descending on Fistral beach to watch the surf and skate action as well as have a look around the surf village.

The best of UK and international surfers are going head-to-head in the country’s biggest surf competition. Shortboard and longboard competitions are being held and the next generation of groms are battling it out in the returning junior open competition.

Mayor Drew Creek, Newquay BID manager Mark Warren and Topher Chard from Salted Café were at Newquay Train Station to welcome the first Boardmasters train at 11.30am. A 1,000-seater later arrived at the train station from London at 2pm.

Mr Warren said: “The town is already buzzing with energy as more festival fans roll in throughout the day.

“They'll be heading off to enjoy the epic vibes of Boardmasters and hopefully making their way back into Newquay to explore everything our amazing local businesses and town have to offer.

“The good news is that organisers Vision Nine have been working with Newquay BID to drive footfall into the town. The bus passes are a lot more affordable this year.

“At Fistral there’s a great viewing area to watch the surf action and the skateboard ramps have returned.

“A big part of the feedback has been that Boardmasters is a surfing event and they are trying to pull that back this year.”
