A NEW team has been launched to ensure derelict buildings in Newquay do not become too much of an eyesore.
Newquay Town Council has reestablished the Derelict Buildings Working Party to identify the dilapidated buildings.
Cornwall Council will be encouraging the property owners of “priority sites” to either get planning permission for redevelopment schemes or to knock them down.
Councillors have raised concerns buildings such as the Hotel Bristol complex should not be allowed to become an eyesore.
Councillor Joanna Kenny said: “The last time we found it necessary to have this in place was between 2013 and 2015 when Newquay was plagued by a horde of derelict buildings.
“The aim is to identify those buildings and sites which look to be deteriorating and making a bad impression of our town.
“We’ll be supported by those services that get involved including the police, Newquay Safe, Community Safety amongst various duties in Cornwall Council and a watching brief from our MP.
“But the grunt work of inspecting, identifying and documenting the sites causing concern will be with the town councillors. “Cornwall Council enforcement, always limited in resources, have promised they’ll do what the law allows with the land owners on our top two priority. “We are happy to welcome all and any suggestions of the sites that are causing the concern to our residents.”
