A NEW site is urgently needed to keep the vital breast screening service in Newquay.

The Cornwall Breast Screening Programme is looking for a suitable location for the mobile breast screening unit to return in autumn 2027.

The organisation is at “crisis point” after being unable to organise a viable site for the past 12 months. Patients will need to travel to the Mermaid Centre in Truro for their mammograms if a suitable location cannot be organised in time.

Morrisons is no longer viable due to new restrictions on holiday periods, meaning the van cannot remain for the required three-month window.

Sites such as Cubert Village Hall have been ruled out because the delivery HGV cannot safely navigate tight turns.

A spokesperson said: “The Cornwall Breast Screening Programme is at crisis point.

“After 12 months of searching, no viable site has been secured.

“A large, level site with wide access suitable for a delivery HGV is needed. Space for patient parking and a utility hook-up and availability for three months every three years.”

Anyone who know of a business, sports club, school, or landowner in Newquay who could host the mobile unit contact the programme directly at Cornwall Breast Screening Programme Director, Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust, Truro, TR1 3LJ. Alternatively, 01872 252208.
