Revised plans have been submitted for proposals to demolish, rebuild and extend a boatbuilding workshop in Charlestown.
Planning permission was granted for the demolition and rebuilding of the site in 2017 but new owners have now submitted alternative plans.
Charlestown Harbour Limited has submitted the new plans for the building which is located at the junction of Charlestown Road and Barkhouse Lane. T
he new plans would allow the building to be divided into separate units which would, the planning documents state, be a “more appropriate and sensitive design” for the development.
A planning statement submitted with the application explains that the original building dates back to the 18th century having originally been a fish cellar.
However it has since been altered, repaired and rebuilt and it is thought that little of the original building remains, the building is also said to be in poor condition.
The documents state: “The proposal will clearly meet the economic objective, supporting the retention of marine-based industry which in turn supports the running and viability of the harbour itself.
"The proposals also expand the footprint of the building and offer space for small-scale workshop use and job creation.
“The proposal will meet the social objective by delivering jobs, improved prosperity and improved health and well-being. The proposal offers the opportunity to provide a convenience store to reduce the need for residents to travel (by car) in order to buy essential items.”
