A COUNCILLOR aims to launch a new community engagement initiative to ensure people’s voices in the Newquay community are heard.
Cllr Abigail Hubbucks is proposing to stage Cuppa with your Councillor to give residents the opportunity to meet with councillors away from the council chamber. The proposal will be discussed at Newquay Town Council’s tourism and community meeting on Tuesday, January 13.
Cllr Hubbucks said: “Cuppa with your Councillor, stems from a core belief that a council functions most effectively when communication between residents and their elected representatives is open, relaxed, and honest.
“Such productive dialogue doesn’t happen by chance. It must be intentionally built through consistent, genuine engagement.
“The primary goal of this initiative is to create accessible opportunities for conversation, ensuring residents feel heard and valued on their own terms. I view it as our fundamental responsibility—and a genuine pleasure—as councillors to proactively meet people where they are, fostering these essential connections in informal, comfortable settings.
“While I hope that, in time, this foundational work encourages greater attendance and engagement at formal Council meetings, I recognise that trust is built step by step. Our MP, Noah Law, holds Pint with your MP events and I think this style of engagement has real potential to allow us to understand each other's wants and needs.
“Ultimately, Cuppa with your Councillor is about prioritising presence, listening actively, and strengthening the community bonds that enable us to best serve Newquay.”
