A FORMER homeless resident who was supported by a St Austell-based housing charity was baptised in the sea at Mevagissey Harbour at the weekend.

Alexander came to Harbour Housing following a hospital stay at a time when he was at risk of living on the streets, before moving into one of the charity’s supported housing projects, where he has continued to rebuild his life.

The baptism, which follows on from Alexander completing the Alpha course at Harbour, was conducted by Revd Stephen Williams, the charity’s chaplain, with staff, friends and fellow residents gathering to support him and witness the important moment.

A local resident who overlooks the beach and has lived in Mevagissey for more than four decades, came down to watch and said she had never seen a sea baptism there before.

Reflecting on his journey, whilst eating fish and chips on the harbour side afterwards, Alexander said: "From being at a place where I had no hope and was homeless, to being somewhere I can stay with Harbour and be part of the church community is amazing.

“Stephen has helped me so much through the Alpha course, and Jan, one of Harbour's trustees, has mentored me through my new faith and friendships."

Malcolm Putko, group operations director of Harbour Housing, said: "It was genuinely moving to see so many staff, friends and fellow residents come together to support Alexander.

“Faith has become an important part of his personal journey, and we were privileged simply to be there alongside him."
