THIS week Newquay Town Council held an extraordinary meeting to discuss Cornwall Council’s Lib Dem administration announcing the reintroduction of glyphosate-based chemical weed treatment across our streets.
Three years ago, Newquay Town Council adopted its own biodiversity policy ending glyphosate use locally, because we take seriously the risks these chemicals pose to human health, our children and pets, and the pollinators our coastal environment depends on.
Let me be clear, we are not opposed to managing weeds. What we oppose is defaulting to chemicals, particularly in a coastal town where drainage ultimately reaches our beaches and sea.
Cornwall Council gave town councils an opt-out window spanning Easter, with punishing financial conditions and little time to respond.
That is not partnership working. We have submitted our opt-out and remain genuinely willing to work with Cornwall Council on weed management that doesn’t compromise the health of our residents, wildlife, or world-famous coastline. Clean streets and a healthy environment are not incompatible.
Newquay Hornets Rugby Club are hosting a Charity Rainbow Colour Run this May. A fantastic, fun event for all ages, sign up, bring the family, and support a club that gives so much to our community. Check Newquay Hornets’ social media for details.
Phil Trebilcock: Harbour View
There will be a much better week with a high pressure, dry, moderate easterly winds at times, but much quieter.
All the pots are being taken to sea now from the quays and the jetty.
Much quieter for visitors this week in the harbour. The next rush will be in May.
There is no band this Saturday at Newquay Rowing Club, but on Sunday at 3pm Sam the Busker will be in the rowing club.
Thought for the week: “Understanding is deeper than knowledge.”
