This past weekend, it was my honour to welcome a delegation from our twinned town of Dinard, France, as we celebrated 40 years of friendship between our two coastal communities. Since the original twinning agreement in 1985 and the signing of the charter in Dinard the following year, this special bond has endured thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of Newquay’s Twinning Association. With around 40 dedicated members, the association has kept this international friendship alive over the decades, even when enthusiasm elsewhere faded.

As Mayor, alongside my fellow Green councillors, I was proud to join the weekend’s events—and what we saw was a relationship that remains strong but has even greater potential. That is why I am pushing for more cultural exchanges throughout the year—from student visits to shared economic opportunities to bring our towns closer than ever. And at Friday’s reception, I announced an exciting step a re-signing of the twinning charter in 2026, exactly 40 years after the original. In today’s world, where division often overshadows unity, connections like ours are more vital than ever. Reaching across the Channel to our friends in Dinard is not about tradition it is a commitment to the values we share: Liberté, égalité, fraternité. If you would like to help strengthen this special bond, why not join the Twinning Association? Whether it is hosting visitors, helping organise events, or simply sharing ideas, your involvement can make a real difference Here’s to the next 40 years of friendship—and to making them even brighter!

Phil Trebilcock: Harbour View

After a long spell of easterly winds, change to SW winds from Friday & few showers for the weekend. Busier this week, few boat trips, plenty of small mackerel around as well, Cornish King Crabs definitely here . Couple of angling boats for sale, also good to see Cuttlefish in the pots . This Saturday, “Steve Panter” is playing at Rowing Club. Thought for the Week: “Believe in yourself, when no one else does “
