It is with a heavy heart that I write this column following the shocking news of the passing of our colleague and friend, councillor Kevin Towill, last Tuesday.

Kevin fought against a significant illness for several years with a quiet determination that reflected his character.

His dedication to our town was unwavering, and his presence in the council chamber will be deeply missed. To honour his memory and his immense contribution, the town council will be holding a minute’s silence at the upcoming environment and facilities, governance and resources committees, as well as at the next full council meeting, bodies that he chaired at various times during his service.

On a brighter note, I am absolutely delighted to share some wonderful news for our community.

This week, we are planting a brand-new orchard for Trenance Valley.

In partnership with the team at Forests for Cornwall, we will be planting 500 trees today, (Wednesday, February 18).

The planting is taking place on the land between the viaduct and the back of the trampoline park, and it promises to be a proper community event.

If you are looking for a free and fun activity to do with the children, please come along. They can get their hands dirty, plant a tree, and watch it grow and flourish over the years to come.

There doesn’t seem to be any let up with this wind and rain, today is south easterly gale and heavy showers.

Hopefully the weather will be better at the weekend.

There are boats on the quay waiting for some dry weather to get painted, ready for Easter. The Active Cellars is starting to be tarmaced this week.

There is no band this Saturday at the Rowing Club.
