A man has been rescued from a mineshaft near St Blazey. Emergency services were called late on Thursday afternoon following reports of concern for a man who was at the bottom of a mineshaft in the Prideaux Wood area near Tywardreath Highway.

Devon and Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service and East Cornwall Search and Rescue Team were in attendance.

A spokesperson for East Cornwall Search and Rescue Team said: “The team received calls for attendance from Devon and Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service to a report of a male injured at the bottom of a mine shaft in the Prideaux Wood area near Tywardreath Highway, Par.

“On arrival, Cornwall Air Ambulance were on scene and one of their Critical Care Paramedics had been lowered into the 35FT shaft by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service. They then hauled the casualty to the surface, handing over to further members of the air ambulance and SWAST paramedics, supported by our Team Doctor.

“Our members then packaged the casualty and transported them through woodland and farmland to the waiting air ambulance on a team stretcher.

“We wish them a speedy recovery, and thank our partners across the Cornish emergency services for some swift and seamless joint working during this rescue.”

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The man was rescued and was taken to hospital by air ambulance. His injuries were initially thought to be serious, but this has since been downgraded."
