A plan to open a secondary school in Perranporth to ease the pressure on Newquay schools has been delayed by a year.

A new school was scheduled to begin taking in pupils at Perranporth in September 2025 but the Department for Education says the opening date has put back to September 2026.

Cornwall Council says that the school will be built on land off Liskey Hill and will be part of the Truro and Penwith Academy Trust which already supports 29 infant, primary and secondary schools across Cornwall including schools in Perranporth, Mithian and Blackwater.

Primary school pupils from Perranporth and surrounding areas including St Agnes, Goonhavern and Cubert have traditionally gone on to attend Treviglas Academy, Newquay Tretherras or either Richard Lander or Penair in Truro.

The new secondary school, which will provide up to 1,050 places, will help to alleviate pressure on the four already oversubscribed secondary schools.

The Government said it decided earlier this year to defer the opening but did not make an announcement.

The Department for Education said the decision had been taken in the light of anticipated demand for pupil places.
