YOUTH disability charity Active8 has received The King's Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) — the highest honour awarded to local voluntary organisations across the UK — at St Erme Community Centre on Saturday (August 1).

Equivalent to an MBE for voluntary organisations, The King's Award for Voluntary Service is the UK's highest recognition for volunteer-led community organisations. A crystal trophy and accompanying certificate were presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Sir Edward Bolitho, alongside Deputy Lieutenants Lady Mary St Levan and Penny Shilston, during Active8's Summer Community Celebration.

The special occasion brought together Active8's young members, their families, volunteers, supporters and partners to celebrate not only this remarkable national recognition, but also the life-changing impact the charity has made over the past 35 years.

Founded in Cornwall in 1990, Active8 has transformed the lives of people aged 14 to 30 living with physical disabilities and life-limiting conditions, and their families. Through inclusive residential programmes, accessible adventures, life skills training, mentoring and lasting peer friendships, the charity helps young people overcome isolation, build confidence and independence, realise their potential and live full lives.

Active8 Chief Executive, John Sweeting, who became involved with the charity as a volunteer more than 15 years ago, said: “Receiving the King's Award for Voluntary Service is an incredible honour and one that belongs to every volunteer, young person, family and supporter who has been part of Active8's journey.

“Our volunteers are the heart of everything we do, giving their time, compassion and expertise to help young people discover confidence, independence and a future filled with possibility.

“To receive this award in front of our members and their families made the occasion even more meaningful, and we hope it inspires even more people to support our mission.”

Active8 was one of five Cornish voluntary organisations, and 231 across the UK, to have been chosen by His Majesty The King to receive this notable honour, which is awarded for life.
