AN ice skating star officially launched Cornwall’s first beachside ice rink at Watergate Bay which will be open during the festive season.

British ice dancer Mark Henretty gave a performance at Skate by the Sea on Monday, which has been created by the Watergate Bay Hotel in partnership with Land Rover Discovery and Cornwall Airport Newquay.

Mark, who represented Great Britain at the World and European Championships, as well as starring in the hit ITV show Dancing on Ice for 12 seasons, was on hand to partner guests who wanted to learn some of his ice skating skills.

Will Ashworth, Watergate Bay Hotel’s founder and executive director, said: “We’ve always believed winter in Cornwall has its own kind of magic – the waves, the wild skies, crisp air and now the first chance to skate by the sea.

“Skating around the rink whilst looking out over the beach is an experience you won’t find anywhere else. We can’t wait to see families and friends creating fresh festive traditions here by the sea.”

The 360 square meter rink offers a new alpine-inspired winter experience by the coast with impressive sea views as its backdrop, overlooking the two-mile surf beach.

Mark said: “The ice rink at the Watergate Bay Hotel is just incredible. I’ve skated ice rinks all around the world, but this is probably one of the most special locations I’ve ever skated in. The only problem for me was the distraction of the view. Otherwise, it is the best of the best.”

Skate by the Sea now open seven days a week until January 11 except on Christmas Day.
