A SUCCESSFUL acupuncture pilot programme in Truro has highlighted growing demand for holistic support services for cancer patients.
The 18-month pilot was delivered by the Sunrise Appeal in partnership with The Cove Macmillan Support Centre, and provided non-pharmacological support for more than 80 cancer patients.
The pilot has been particularly successful in supporting patients experiencing dry mouth following radiotherapy treatment for head and neck cancers, alongside breast and prostate cancer patients managing hot flushes and other treatment-related symptoms such as anxiety and sleep disturbance.
Patients referred to the service receive an initial consultation followed by a tailored course of six to eight weekly acupuncture sessions. More than 150 referrals were received from oncology consultants, radiographers, dieticians, cancer nurse specialists and maxillofacial teams. Demand was so high, referrals had to close to allow all existing patients to be seen before the pilot funding period ended in May.
“Many people don't realise that the side effects of cancer treatment can continue long after treatment ends and have a huge impact on day-to-day life,” said senior radiographer and qualified acupuncturist Jenny Doolan. “Acupuncture has offered people another layer of support, and for many patients, it has made a real difference.”
The Sunrise Appeal has played a vital role in enhancing cancer care across Cornwall for over two decades. This latest project reflects the charity's long-standing commitment to funding initiatives that improve the experience and wellbeing of people living with cancer.
“We've funded equipment, technology and training, but equally important are services that support people emotionally and physically throughout their cancer journey,” said co-founder and trustee Janet Shephard. “Seeing the impact this has had on patients has been incredibly encouraging.”
The success of the pilot is already influencing future care pathways. Support for head and neck cancer patients experiencing dry mouth will continue through the maxillofacial team, and The Cove is keen to identify an acupuncturist who could continue and expand the service in future.
