A GRAVEYARD in Newquay has closed temporarily following the damage caused during Storm Goretti.
Cornwall Council has shut Fairpark Cemetery so that staff can inspect headstones for damage from fallen trees. They have not said whether any graves have been disturbed by uprooted trees.
A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said: “Due to damage caused during Storm Goretti, Fairpark Cemetery is temporarily closed.
“Staff are onsite removing fallen trees, assessing the condition of the grounds and carefully inspecting headstones for damage. We’ll know more when the assessments have been completed.
“Members of the public are asked to respect the closure and not to enter the cemetery to allow the teams to work safely.
“We are working closely with funeral directors to ensure that any planned services can go ahead safely, without interruption.
