A FLOOD warning has been put in place for the Newquay area during Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has issued a flood alert for Chapel Porth to The Rumps including Trevaunance Cove, Perranporth, Newquay, Porth, Mawgan Porth and Polzeath, excluding the tidal Camel Estuary.

Communities most at risk include Perranporth, Porth, Mawgan Porth and Polzeath. People are being urged to avoid coastal roads, footpaths and carparks, which “may be flooded.”

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “High tides and forecast weather conditions over the next two days may lead to flooding.

“Flooding is possible over the high tides on the evening of Wednesday, November 5 and morning of Thursday, November 6. Risk of spray and waves over-topping over low-lying areas.

“Expect tide levels along the coast to be up to 0.5 metres above tide table level. Strong force five south-easterly winds and offshore wave heights of up to 2.3 metres are forecast over the high tide.

“Coastal conditions should ease by Thursday pm tide. We are closely monitoring the situation.”
