Prime Cattle
The numbers keep coming, with 51 quality Cornish cattle through the ring selling on a blistering trade.
Top price back above the £4.00 per kilo mark for the best quality 595kg Limousin heifer from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston selling away at 408p/kg (£2,428). Further Limousin heifers to 390p/kg twice for Messrs Bryant, with the heavier of the two realising £2,516.
A super run of heavyweight and well-finished cattle from Mr J M Venning of St Stephen, St Austell topped at 389p/kg (£2,976) for his 765kg Limousin heifer, with other heifer prices at 387kg (£2,844), 382p/kg (£2,540), 370p/kg (£2,616) and 362p/kg (£2,990).
A shapey young 527kg Limousin heifer from Mr O Penellum of St Erme, Truro traded at 388p/kg and the best Limousin heifer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro went under the hammer at 370p/kg (£2,424).
Steers selling on just as strong of a trade, with yet another pair of stunning Limousins from Messrs Bryant joint-top at 395p/kg (£2,568 & £2,465) and another pair of heavier steers from the same stable at 377p/kg (£2,816) and 372p/kg (£2,861).
A strong Salers steer from Mr G J Richards of Porkellis, Helston weighed in at 741kg and went under the hammer at 368p/kg (£2,727), a 706kg Hereford steer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay realised 362p/kg (£2,556) and a 692kg Simmental steer from Messrs J M Hicks & Son of Sennen, Penzance at 360p/kg (£2,491) thereafter.
Top pounds-per-head was awarded to a monstrous and well covered Limousin steer from Mr Venning at 338p/kg, which tipped the scales at 919kg, to a resultant £3,106!
Cull Cows
A tidy entry of cows forward, with a good mixture of beef and dairy types, and some good quality presented. Joint top call of 335p/kg for a pair of good Limousin cows, one being from Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston at £2,368 and the second from Mr F Stephens of Lostwithiel at £2,164.
A South Devon from Mr R T Lobb of St Ewe realised 302p/kg and a South Devon cow from Mr Stephens traded at 292p/kg. A smart 911kg Hereford cow from Mr W A M Rowe of Constantine, Falmouth sold for 283p/kg and a resultant £2,578, with a Sussex cow from Mr O M Harris of Moorswater, Liskeard tied at the same money.
The best Devon cow from a run on behalf of Messrs R H & R D Richards of Sparnon Gate, Redruth parted away at 275p/kg and another weighty Hereford from Mr W A M Rowe saw 270p/kg, with a Devon cow again from Messrs Richards thereafter at 263p/kg.
Dairy types to 296p/kg for a Friesian cow from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro, with a pair of Friesians from Messrs B L Hearn & Partners of Whitecross, Newquay at 294p/kg and 289p/kg. A cow-aged Friesian steer forward from Messrs D J & A E Skewes of Penzance also looked well sold at 276p/kg.
Store Cattle
A strong entry forward topping at £2450 twice for 2-year-old Blue steers on behalf of Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance followed by Angus steers of the same age from the same Vendor at £2110.
Mr A Blamey of Veryan, Truro, sold top quality steers to £2040 and £1835, whilst Messrs W H B Stevens & Daughter of Helston sold 2-year-old Herefords to £1900 and £1850 whilst a 27-month-old Hereford steer from Mr W A M Rowe of Constantine, Falmouth realised £1800.
Messrs S & C Taffinder of Portscatho, Truro sold a superior 20-month-old South Devon to £1795, whilst 2-year-old steers from Mr J A Hall of Leedstown, Hayle realised £1755 and £1695.
Younger steers topping at £1605 for a trio of 14-month-old Herefords on behalf of Mr R J Osborne of Fraddon, with a slightly younger Hereford from the same vendor realising £1545.
Messrs T W & W T James of Sancreed, Penzance sold a smart 13-month-old Limousin at £1540, whilst 1 year old Herefords from Mr W A M Rowe sold to £1470 at £1450.
Heifers topping at £1990 for a 19-month-old Angus on behalf of Mr A Blamey, followed by an 18-month-old Blue from Messrs D J and A E Skewes of Penzance realising £1885.
Mr R Withers of Probus sold a 17-month-old Limousin heifer to £1835, followed by Mr K R Williams of Camborne with his pair of 18-month-old Limousins achieving £1725.
Best of the younger heifers from Mr K Bottrell of Newbridge, Penzance, seeing his 14-month-old pair of Herefords to £1300, followed by a younger Hereford from Mr R J Osborne at £1235.
A cracking run of predominantly Shorthorn cows and calves from Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell topped at £2620 with further outfits to £2400, £2350, £2280 and £2260, whilst Aberdeen Angus in-calvers on behalf of Mr D Reed of Four Lanes, Redruth topped at £1460.
Rearing Calves
A good run of young milk calves today, with no weaned calves on offer, and trade would look strong throughout the sale.
Best of the bull calves to £620 for a good British Blue x sold by Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East, Newquay who went on to sell other British Blue x bulls at £550 and £505, and their British Blue x heifer at £310.
Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey had a good consignment of young calves well presented with their best British Blue x bull making £535 and their run of Hereford x bulls at £445, £400 and £385 and going on to top the heifer section with a British Blue x making £435 and further British Blue x heifers making £400, £395 and £355, with their very young Hereford x heifers at £260 and £255.
Mr D Rawsthorn from Trerice sold a British Blue x bull for £480 and his British Blue x heifer making £395. Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £390 for Mr W R Davey from Probus who sold another Aberdeen Angus x bull for £380 and Aberdeen Angus x heifer at £300.
Further British Blue x bulls to £380 for Messrs C J & J E Colwell from Creed and young Limousin x bulls to £295 for Messrs M P Varcoe & Partners from St Wenn, and further British Blue x heifers to £405 for Mr A J Thomas from Penryn.
Prime Lambs
A lighter entry and following the National trends trade dropping back again this week, being the first week of 2025 that the SQQ average has fallen below £3/kilo.
Topping the lambs at £153.00 and 309p/kg were a pen of well finished 49.5kg lambs from Mr N Taylor of Bodmin.
Cull Ewes
A quieter entry of cull ewes following a very wet week.
Averages still sitting approx. £10/head above this time last year. Fewer Continentals forward, but with top price of £166 for a pair of Charollais x ewes from Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro.
Dorsets to £152 and £139 for Messrs P Kingdon & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay; £121.50 for Messrs G W & J E Hawkey of St Wenn; £117.50 for Messrs I C & W P Lobb of St Ewe; £115.50 for Messrs G C & V D Mitchell of Liskeard and £115 for Mr R T Lobb of St Ewe.
A single medium bodied Texel for Messrs C D Greenaway & Sons of St Issey sold for £150. Suffolks to £147 for a single from Messrs M & C Hawken of Castle an Dinas, St Columb.
Mule x to £141 again for Messrs Hawkey of St Wenn. Ile-De-France to £139 for Messrs E M C Bax of Wadebridge. Leicester to £139 for Mr N Taylor of Demelza, Bodmin.
Rams to £147.50 for a Charollais from Messrs G W & H E Hawkey of St Wenn. 2T sheep to £134.50 for Roussin from Mr T Cotton of Redruth with his 6T weather selling to £136.50.
Store Lambs
A big entry to report and stand on trade.
Best on the day were a pen of 9 framey Zwartbles at £129.50 on behalf of Messrs A P & S R Hooper of St Columb, followed by a pen of 12 fleshy Charolais crosses from Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro at £116.50.
Messrs B N & C Hoskins of Silverwell, Truro were a touch behind at £116 followed by Mr O M Jay of Liskeard at £115. Several plainer types forward which generally traded between £60 and £80.
