Prime Cattle

Another topping entry through the ring this week, with 24 quality Cornish cattle all selling on the prevailing strong trade.

Mr M A Grigg of Sticker, St Austell had another fine consignment of stunning Limousins in this week, with a joint top price in the heifers of 415p/kg for a 631kg animal at £2,619 and a 739kg animal at the top pounds-per-head of £3,067.

Mr Grigg also topping the steers with his 677kg Limo at 412p/kg and a resultant £2,789 and another 676kg Limousin from the same farming at 405p/kg (£2,738).

Messrs W S Gay & Son from St Allen, Truro saw their best 637kg Limousin steer at 396p/kg (£2,523) and a run of 11 good cattle in from H A & M J Farming of Kea, Truro saw a top price of 370p/kg (£2,135) for a 577kg Limousin heifer.

Thereafter Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay had a run of his usual quality and heavy-weight Herefords topping at 360p/kg (£2,632) for a 731kg heifer.

Cull Cows

An entry predominantly comprised of Dairy types this week, but as with the Prime Cattle trade would look strong.

Top of the day to 323p/kg for an Angus cow from Mr J Wilkinson of Constantine, Falmouth, with a Hereford cow from Messrs J & I Parfitt of Lanteglos-byFowey at 272p/kg thereafter.

A cow-aged Blue steer from Mr T D Michell of Hugus, Truro sold away at 240p/kg and a single 1189kg Devon cull bull from Mr B J Maycock of Rosenannon, Bodmin traded at 239p/kg and a resultant £2,842.

Top of the dairy types to 252p/kg for a Norwegian Red from Mr P A Henwood of St Issey, Wadebridge, followed by a Friesian from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston at 247p/kg and a Friesian cow from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro was one bid behind at 246p/kg.

A Friesian cow from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston looked well sold at 239p/kg and yet another Friesian, this time from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance realised 237p/kg.

Store Cattle

A good quality entry and a fine trade all around topping at £2365 for a stand out pair of 2-year-old Simmental steers on behalf of Mr C G Andrew of St Austell who thereafter saw British Blues of the same age part away at £2005 and £1970.

Mr G Eustice, Hayle sold 1½- year-old South Devons to £2290, followed by Mr T G Hawke of Colan, Newquay with his South Devons at £2050.

Mr D P Anderson of St Buryan, Penzance sold 30-month-old Blue steers to £1935, followed by a pair of 28-month-old Herefords from Messrs V C & F Hosking of St Martin, Helston at £1855.

Mr K Thomas of Helston sold a single 18-month-old Simmental to £1855, followed by a pair of 16-month-old Devons from Mr B J Maycock of Rosenannon, Bodmin at £1800.

Several vendors marketing 16-month-old steers, being Mrs S J Tune of St Columb at £1695, Mr K R Williams of Camborne at £1575, Mr B Cowell of Helston at £1460 and Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro at £1415.

Heifers topped at £2100 for a single 19-month-old South Devon from Mr G Eustice, Gwinear with further South Devons from the same farm achieving £1940, £1910, £1880 and a slightly younger heifer to £1580.

Mrs E R Clemens of St Ervan sold a 17-month-old South Devon to £1940, whilst Mr T G Hawke sold an 18-month-old to £1890 with further lots from him to £1720, £1690 and Herefords to £1595.

Younger types to £1285 for a pair of 15-month-old Devons from Mr B J Maycock, whilst a pair of 15-month-old from Mr K R Williams of Camborne parted away at £1250.

Rearing Calves

The stronger and first quality calves remain a buoyant trade, with the second quality or plainer calves a more selective trade.

Best of the bull calves today sold to a joint top of £580 for three British Blue x bulls, two of them being sold by Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey who sold further British Blue x bulls at £575, £545, £540 and £535, and going on to top the heifer section with their best British Blue x heifer selling for £405 and selling a further three British Blue x heifers for £395 each, with another at £385 and their Hereford x heifer making £375.

Messrs R N & D Jenkin from Manaccan shared the top slot with their best British Blue x bull making £580 with another British Blue x bull at £560, and their Aberdeen Angus x bull away at £500, and going on to sell British Blue x heifers to £400 with others at £355 and £350.

A nice young Charolais x bull made £495 on behalf of Messrs H L, T & C Lyne from St Clement and Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah sold a British Blue x bull for £355 and their Limousin x heifer made £325.

Further Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £345 for Mr W R Davey from Probus and the best of the Devon x bulls to £285 for Mr D R Hair from London Apprentice who sold further Devon x bulls at £265 and £245.

With plenty of other vendors selling heifers between £280 to £345. Just a handful of stronger weaned calves on offer between 2 - 3 months old seeing a strong trade with a Limousin x steer making £620 and also a bunch of three British Blue x heifers flew away to £620 each, all for Messrs P J Grylls & Son from Kenwyn.

Prime Lambs

Trade has firmed on the week, with numbers tighter nationally.

A run of lambs from Messrs M A and C Sandbach of St Breock, with their stand-out single 56kg Texel x topping at £178, sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Setting the premium at 337p/kg were a trio of 41kg blocky Beltex lambs from Mr J Tripconey, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A lighter entry of cull ewes this week with an overall average of £115.50 which is approximately £12 per head up on the year and well in line with the south-west regional markets.

Few of the best types forward but nevertheless topping at £168 for a pen of Texel x Zwartbles 2 tooths from Mr B Tomkins of Wendron, Helston. Medium sized Charolais to £139.50 for Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro.

Medium sized Texels to £137 from Mr G H Warmington of Falmouth; £136, £135 and £128 from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb; and £124.50 for crossbreds from Messrs W & R Taffinder of Veryan, Truro.

Medium sized Suffolks to £134 and £125.50 for Messrs C H P Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge. Medium sized Dorsets to £129 for Mr P C Tregenna of Veryan Green, Truro.

Store Lambs

Reasonable numbers and a good trade for the generally better-quality stores on offer. Miss L Baker of Callestick, Truro topped the section at £128.50 for her close to finish lambs, followed by Mr E Tuckett of Par, St Austell at £123.50, with further full pens from him £116.50, £112.50 and £97.

Mr J Vincent of Zennor, Penzance sold a good quality pen to £114.50 with further lots from him to £100 and £94.50.
