Prime Cattle

A quality entry of prime cattle presented this week, with a scorching trade for everything on offer.

A topping run of six well-finished Limousins from Mr M A Grigg of Lower Sticker, St Austell stole the show with his best 726kg heifer selling away at 430p/kg (£3,122), his best steer at 429p/kg (£3,308), another 672kg heifer at 428p/kg (£2,876), a steer and heifer both tied at 425p/kg (£2,877 & £2,992) and a final steer at 418p/kg (£3,198).

Overall average across the six bullocks of 425.8p/kg. Next up was a young South Devon steer from Mr R Sadler of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth at 390p/kg, followed by Mr G A Furr of Mount Hawke with his Limousin steer at 382p/kg.

Mr Sadler had another South Devon steer thereafter at 362p/kg and the best Hereford steer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay realised 360p/kg.

Cull Cows

A good entry of cull animals to report, with the fast trade following the trends of the Prime beef.

Top in the section to 362p/kg for a cow-aged Angus steer from Mr R A Bryant of Bodmin, a Devon steer from the same farming then at 341p/kg and a final Angus steer from Mr Bryant at 312p/kg.

Top price cow at 298p/kg for a good Welsh Black from Mr B K Martyn of Holsworthy, with his second same-breed 842kg cow at 285p/kg and a very respectable £2,400. Mr G A Furr then saw his Angus cow trade at 278p/kg.

Best dairy type to 292p/kg for a Friesian cow from J C & F C Tripconey Ltd of Mullion, followed by a Friesian from Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston at 255p/kg and a pair of Friesian cows from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston went under the hammer at 251p/kg and 245p/kg.

Store Cattle

A substantial entry of 250 stores through the ring this week selling on a keen trade as reflected in the top prices.

An overall average of £1400, with many of the entry being forward shorter-term types, and a top call overall of £2090 for a single 20-month-old Angus steer on behalf of Messrs H J & B M Whell of Luxulyan, Bodmin.

1½-year-old steers from Mr R J Trezise of Penzance sold to £2040 for Shorthorns and £1875 for Stabilisers, whilst a pair of 30-month-old Angus steers from Mr C R N Baker of Newquay realised £2035.

2-year-old steers from Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance sold to £2020 for Angus, £2000 for Herefords and £1885 for British Blues, whilst Mr P D Coles of Week-St-Mary sold a smart trio of 2-year-old Blues to £1980.

Plenty of cracking cattle thereafter trading at £1600, £1700 and £1800, though too many to mention but a credit to the vendors. Younger steers topping at £1900 for four 15-month-old Limousins on behalf of Messrs A T & S E Dunn of Helston.

Heifers topping at £1630 for a pair of classy 21-month-old Shorthorns from Mr K Thomas of Helston, who sold a further British Blue to £1630, which was also achieved by Messrs W W James & Sons for their pair of 2-year-old Blues.

Fine heifers in from Mr R B P Nicholls of St Buryan, Penzance who saw Herefords to £1625 and Devons and Shorthorns to £1585, followed by a single 1½-year-old Devon from Mr A Taylor of Nancegollan to £1580.

The best of the younger heifers coming from Messrs A T & S E Dunn as their 1-year-old Limousins parted away at £1560, with a further seven to £1540.

Mr B Cowell of Helston sold a pair of 30-month-old Simmental bulls to £2180 a piece, whilst The Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly sold Limousin cows and calves to £2410.

Rearing Calves

A large entry of 145 calves through the ring at Truro this week, with a strong trade seen throughout.

Messrs R N & D Jenkin of Manaccan, Helston topped the day with their run of classy 8 to 12 week old British Blue x calves selling very well with steers at £625, heifers at £555 twice and £545 and two of their Angus steers at £480 and £470.

More 12 week old Limousin steers from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro also saw a good trade with prices at £605 and £595.

Messrs R M & C D Rundle of Mevagissey saw their pair of good 21 day old Blue bull calves trade at £565 and £545 and other quality bull calves from the same farming at £530, £470, £445 and £405 to name a few.

A same-aged Blue bull from Messrs R J, K M, A M & S E Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston was close behind at £535.

Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston sold their 4 week old Limousin bull calf at £400 and Messrs R, N W G & P J Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston saw their 12 week old Blue steer at the same money.

The strongest 8 week old Devon bull from Mr D R Hair of London Apprentice also sold at £400 and a same-age Hereford bull from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance parted away at £390.

Younger heifers also topped by Messrs Rundle at £470, with yet more of their heifers at £405, £385, £310, £300 and £270.

The best 8 week old Blue heifer from Messrs C J & J E Colwell of Creed, Truro sold at £465, a 12 week old Limousin from Messrs Grylls at £440 and a 4 week old Blue from Messrs Blee at £400.

Prime Lambs

Similar averages on the week, with the heavies particularly sought after and soaring away to £190 for a single 69.4kg Suffolk from Mr M A Horrocks of Cubert, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Setting the premium at 338p/kg for a stand-out 47kg butchers lamb for Mr A Old of St Columb, sold to L C Farms Ltd of Hatherleigh.

Cull Ewes

An improved entry and quality this week were met with competitive bidding, and a super trade across the board.

The overall average for the entire section was £119.50, many more ewes required to satisfy buyer demand. Top call of £180 for a medium bodied Charollais ewe from Mr & Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay.

Suffolks to £176 and £148 from Messrs W E & A Pearce of Troon, Camborne. Texels to £168 and £149 for Messrs M A & C Sandbach of St Breock, Wadebridge and £140 for Mrs A Shazell of St Columb.

Crossbred ewes to £170 for Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey of St Keverne, Helston; £140 again for Mr & Mrs Hawkey; and £140 for Messrs W R H & R P Heywood of Tregony, Truro.

Suffolk x mules to £143 for Mr N Holman of Chyverton, Truro; and £138 for Mr P G Gilbert of St Buryan, Penzance.

Rams to £157 for a Texel again from Mrs Shazell; Charolais to £144 and £138 for Messrs S & S A J Rickard of Devoran, Truro; Dorset to £136 for Messrs S J & S M Ward of Grampound Road, Truro.

Store Lambs

A grand entry of 175 store lamb; quite the opposite to the handful forward last week but plenty of demand from start to finish.

A well grown Suffolk x ram lamb from Mr P G Gilbert of St Buryan, Penzance topped the section at £137, followed by a strong single from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb at £132.50.

A consignment of 70 from P C J Farming of Helston saw smart medium-term pens to £115.50, £110.50, £110 & £106 to name a few, with an overall average of £106.

Another big consignment came from Messrs S J & D E J Worden of St Martin, Helston which topped at £91.50.

Breeding Ewes

Some consignments of breeding ewes forward including a flock dispersal of Dorset ewes on behalf of Mr Richard Dawe of Grampound.

The well-turned out and genuine sheep met strong demand, seeing the 6 tooth ewes sell to £202. Full mouths sold to £192 (twice).

An entry of Suffolk x mule shearlings from Messrs J C Salmon & Son of Newquay saw their best sell to £195 and two pens at £190.
