Prime Cattle

Numbers very short this week but those that were presented sold on a fast trade.

Top call to 400p/kg for a young Parthenais steer from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro and a monstrous 819kg South Devon x from Mr T Eustice of Crantock, Newquay realised 376p/kg and a resultant £3,079.

A second Parthenais steer from Messrs Williams parted away at 370p/kg and the best steer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green sold at 348p/kg.

Heifers topped at 358p/kg for a Hereford from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay and another Hereford heifer, this time from Messrs J D Phillips & Son of St Buryan, Penzance, made 348p/kg.

Cull Cows

A cracking trade to report in the cull section, with all types looking keenly sought after.

Top price was very well awarded to a cow-aged South Devon steer from Mr J Huntington of St Mawes at 325p/kg (£2,353), followed by a Stabiliser cow from Mr P Green of Stithians, Truro at 316p/kg.

A Simmental cow from Mr B Cowell of Helston traded at 291p/kg (£2,098), followed by a Limousin cow from Mr P C W Moyle of Mawnan Smith, Falmouth at 277p/kg and £2,385. Another pair of Stabiliser cows from Mr Green then went on to sell at 273p/kg and 270p/kg.

Best dairy type to 260p/kg for a Friesian cow from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro, followed by a Friesian cow from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro at 250p/kg (£2,010), tied with a Friesian cow from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro at the same money.

Another good Friesian from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston went under the hammer at 247p/kg (£2,062), followed by a trio of Friesians tied at 245p/kg; one from Messrs Wills and two from Messrs Bray.

Store Cattle

Another strong trade to report this week, with all on offer looking well sold.

A varied entry sold to a top call for steers of £2,350 for a forward 28 month old Blue from Mr W M Mark of Par, St Austell, with another from the same vendor parting for £2,270.

Mr A G Prowse of St Allen, Truro sold 1 ½ year old Friesian x to £1,680 and £1,610, whilst 1 ½ year old steers from Mr J L Sampson of St Buryan, Penzance and Mr J F Rowe of Par, St Austell realised £1,615 and £1,575 respectively.

Heifers to £1,550 for 5 cracking 18 month old South Devons from Mr J L Sampson, followed by James Eustice Farms of Wadebridge who sold South Devon heifers to £1,535 and £1,420. In calf Simmental cows from Mr B Cowell of Helston realised £2,270 thrice and £2,260 twice.

Rearing Calves

A much larger entry of calves on offer this week, selling on a good trade throughout.

Messrs R N & D Jenkin from Manaccan had a stronger run of calves around 2 months old selling a pair of British Blue x steers for £560 each and their pair of Aberdeen Angus x steers making £535 each and going on to top the heifer section with a British Blue x making £520 and another at £470.

The younger calves saw a fast trade with the best British Blue x bull selling for £510 for Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey who sold further British Blue x bulls at £500, £485, £475, £470, £460 and £445, and their Hereford x bulls selling to £450, with further Hereford x bulls at £425 and £420, then selling their British Blue x heifers to £390 twice with another British Blue x heifer at £350, with a Hereford x heifer to £295 and further Hereford x heifers at £255, £245 and £230.

Further Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £420 for Messrs A G Cave & Son from Rame who sold another Aberdeen Angus x bull for £395.

Limousin x bulls to £405 for Messrs L M & C G Vian from Wendron who also sold an Aberdeen Angus x bull for £325 with their Limousin x heifers making £300 and £275.

Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East sold a British Blue x bull for £400 with another at £390, and their British Blue x heifers selling to £330 and another at £325.

A nice young Charolais x bull sold for £380 for Messrs H L,T & C Lyne from St Clement and further Limousin x bulls to £370 for Messrs J A & A T Dunn from Blackrock who went on to sell a run of Friesian bulls to £350 and £300, £275 twice and £250.

Plenty of other vendors marketing bulls between £350 to £420 and heifers between £200 to £265.

Prime Lambs

A decent entry with larger numbers forward and firm trade, with an overall average of £144/head.

A stand out, enormous 72.5kg butchers lamb from Mr T Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge saw the hammer go down at £183.50, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

A trio of Texel heavies from the same farm sold at £165, also to J V Richards Ltd, closely followed by 55.4kg Charollais x lambs at £164 from Messrs S C R & J F Brake of Mawgan Porth.

Setting the premium at 319 p/kg for a smart pen of fleshed 46.6kg lambs from Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound, purchased by Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A very light entry and fewer premium continental types, though a top price of £170 achieved by Messrs D W & N J Barker of St Mawgan, Newquay.

A pen of six Suffolk rams from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb realised £151 a piece, whilst a single ewe from Mr G C Grigg of Veryan, Truro achieved £144. Messrs J Lutey & Sons of Grampound sold their best ewes to £129 and Mr G M Henwood of Camborne marketed ewes at £124 & £114.

Store Lambs

Very tight numbers but a cracking trade which topped at £136 on behalf of Messrs W & R Taffinder of Truro.

Messrs J Lutey & Sons sold a close to finish single to £134, followed by a pen of four from Mr G Vaughan of Troon, Camborne at £128.50. Stores averaged £131.25, excluding long term types.
