Prime Cattle

A good entry of Prime Cattle yet again, with a stand-on trade not faltering despite the recent easing of the Deadweight.

Top pence-per-kilo to 428p/kg (£2,303) for a smart 538kg Limousin steer from Messrs F T & F M Johns of Cury, Helston, with their further 532kg Limousin topping the heifer section as well at 421p/kg (£2,240).

A 629kg non FABBL Limousin heifer from Messrs D Trewern & Son of Porthcurno, Penzance parted away at 404p/kg (£2,541) and further cattle from Messrs Johns saw another pair of Limousin steers tied at 400p/kg and a 580kg Limousin heifer at 398p/kg (£2,308).

A pair of good Limousin steers from Messrs S M & J Blee of St Martin, Helston realised 398p/kg (£2,722) and 394p/kg (£2,439).

A stunning run of heavyweight and well finished South Devon steers from Messrs G B Hocking & Son of St Buryan, Penzance saw a phenomenal trade and are truly a credit to the farming.

Top of the run to 396p/kg (£3,144) for a 794kg animal, with other prices at 392p/kg (£3,034), 385p/kg (£2,891), 373p/kg (£2,868) and a final weighty 857kg animal at 360p/kg (£3,085).

Overall average pounds-per-head of the five animals sitting at £3,004.40.

Cull Cows

Another tidy entry of Cull Cows and Bulls to report with some quality beef animals forward.

A good cow-aged Limousin steer from Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro at 332p/kg, followed by a non FABBL Charolais cow from Mr K R Williams of Tehidy, Camborne at 323p/kg.

A smart 855kg non FABBL South Devon cow from Messrs D Trewern & Son of Porthcurno, Penzance achieved 318p/kg (£2,719), a 647kg Simmental cow from Messrs J & R J Nankervis of Zennor, St Ives parted away at 311p/kg (£2,012) and a 739kg non FABBL Charolais cow from Messrs D T Barrand & Son of Tehidy, Camborne went under the hammer at 304p/kg (£2,247).

A 712kg non FABBL Limousin cow from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas made 301p/kg (£2,143), which was tied with a 693kg non FABBL Limousin cow from Messrs R & J Bailey of Frogpool, Truro at the same pence-per-kilo and £2,086.

Other good quality beef types forward which are too numerous to mention but a credit to the vendors.

Very limited dairy types to 196p/kg for a Friesian from Mr D Pascoe of Sithney, Helston.

Four Cull Bulls topped at 245p/kg for a non FABBL Limousin from Mr M P Carlyon of St Day, Redruth and top Bull pounds-per-head at £2,620 for a 1175kg non FABBL Charolais animal from Messrs D T Barrand & Son of Tehidy, Camborne.

Store Cattle

Another firm trade although light entry, topping at £2,200 for steers on behalf of Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston for five 1½-year-old Limousins, with the vendors also going on to sell Friesians of the same age at £1,925 and £1,650.

Super Hereford steers from Messrs J J & M Bowden & Son of St Columb selling to £2,120 and £2,000 for Herefords, £2,080 for Limousins and £1,905 for Anguses, followed by a single 2-year-old Charolais from Messrs D T Barrand & Son of Tehidy, Camborne at £1,870 and a Blue from Holt Hamoen Farming of Devoran at £1,750.

1½-year-old steers from Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell selling to £1,650 for Limousins and £1,625 for Angus followed by further Angus from Holt Hamoen Farming at £1,605.

Best of the younger steers selling to £1,900 for a premium pair of 13-month-old Limousins from Mr S P Bache of Mount Hawke, Truro, with a further pair at £1,770 whilst Mr L Vague of Baldhu, Truro sold a single 1-year-old Simmental at £1,730 and a pair of 15-month-old Blues from Mr C G Andrew of St Austell realised £1,700.

Further Simmentals from Mr L Vague at £1,545, and Angus from Mr C G Andrew at £1,510.

Heifers topping at £2,235 for the choice single Angus, being 20-month-old from Messrs A D & J A Bray, with the same vendor going on to sell Blues to £1,970 and Limousins to £1,855, all of a similar age.

Holt Hamoen Farming saw their 22-month-old heifer to £1,725, whilst a 2-year-old Limousin from Mr M T Carlyon of St Day achieved £1,670, with another at £1,595.

Younger heifers selling to £1,315 for seven first class Limousins on behalf of Messrs B K & E L Piper of Sithney, Helston followed by the choice Limousin from a grand run from Messrs W H Tripconey & Sons of Coverack, Helston at £1,080.

A pair of 7-month-old Limousins from Mr G J Mugford of Nancegollan, whilst bulling heifers sold to £1,880 and £1,600 on behalf of Mr V Curtis of Helston.

Some excellent cow and calf outfits in from Mr P Green of Stithians, Truro with Stabilisers to £2,860, £2,800 twice and £2,410, with an Angus outfit from the same vendor to £2,630.

Rearing Calves

An increase in calf numbers forward this week including a run of older weaned calves as well, which all sold on a stand-on trade to the ringside full of regular buyers.

Young calves topped at £595 for a Blue bull from Mr A Giles of Paul, Penzance, with his other Blue bull at £535.

A pair of good Angus bull calves from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston parted away at £525 and £495 and their Blue bull at £460, tied with a good Charolais bull calf from Messrs B & J Bailey of Veryan, Truro at the same money.

The best pair of Bull calves from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay sold at £425 and £415.

Heifer calves saw a similarly strong trade with the best Blue from Mr A Giles at £575, a Limousin heifer from Messrs L C & P Pengilly & Son of St Keverne, Helston at £515 and a Blue calf from Messrs Bray at £450.

Another Blue heifer calf from Messrs A J Ead of St Austell realised £400 and a Charolais heifer from Messrs Bailey at £380 thereafter.

Stirks topped by a good Limousin steer from Messrs L Wherry & Son of Sancreed, Penzance at £800 and a Hereford heifer from the same stable at £670.

A run of older calves from Mr A Giles topped at £790 for his Limousin bull, his Angus bull at £745 and another Limousin bull at £675.

A run of Angus weaned calves from Mr R B P Nicholls of St Buryan, Penzance all looked well sold with prices at £625 for bulls and £645 thrice for heifers.

Prime Hoggs

A lighter entry of hoggs as we head into the tail-end of the old season lambs. A steady trade, with a pen of 63.8kg ram hoggs from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay topping at £147.50, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Prime Lambs

A fine entry, which included several pens of sappy first- pick lambs which were sought after.

Seven pens achieved over £160/head and topping at £168.50 for a pen of cracking 45.3kg lambs from Messrs R J Vincent & Son of Blackwater, Truro, sold to Jaspers of South Petherwin.

Setting the premium to 387p/kg for well- finished lambs from Mr T Ham of Baldhu, Truro, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A sizable entry with fewer of the best types forward this week, yet those entered continuing to realise very strong prices peaking at £224.50 for a good conformation medium size Texel from Messrs J E Nicholls & Partners of Kea, Truro.

Charollais to £189 for Mr A S P Wright of Penhallow, Truro.

Suffolks to £186 for Mrs B M Chapman of St Columb.

Further Texels to £175.50 for Messrs K & D McFadden of St Just, Penzance; £171 again for Messrs Nicholls; and £170 for Mrs Chapman.

Further Suffolks to £175 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro; £165 for Messrs R E Gilbert & Son of Ruan Minor, Helston; and £164 for Mr D J Tremain of St Columb.

Store Sheep

A large run of couples in this week from various vendors, selling to a top call for singles of £205 on behalf of Mr L Burnett of St Austell, followed by single outfits from Messrs K & D McFadden of St Just, Penzance at £193 and Mr L Jose of Camborne at £181.

Doubles selling to £304 on behalf of Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston, followed by doubles from Messrs K & D McFadden at £278 and Mr L Burnett at £276.

The store lamb section notably light in numbers and trade easing slightly in line with the finished section, selling to a top call of £104 on behalf of Mrs B Baxter.
