Prime Cattle
A truly exceptional entry of 52 Prime Cattle for the first market of 2026, with the fastest trade in the South West seen for all of the first class quality cattle on offer.
Messrs W T Bryant & Sons of St Martin, Helston were back again with their 8 stunning Limousins topping the day with heifers at 432p/kg (£2,821), 420p/kg twice (£2,705 & £2,558), 410p/kg (£2,468) and their steers at 390p/kg twice (£3,104 & £2,714) and 378p/kg for a weighty 884kg animal at top pounds-per-head of £3,342.
A quality 650kg Limousin heifer from F G Pryor & Son Ltd of Perranwell Station, Truro flew away to 418p/kg (£2,717), followed by a strong 611kg Limousin steer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 410p/kg (£2,505) and his 725kg Limousin heifer at 400p/kg (£2,900) thereafter.
Another good Limousin OTM steer from Messrs Bryant sold away at 400p/kg (£3,024) and a pair of Limousin heifers from Mr R E Richards of St Keverne, Helston traded at 395p/kg and 390p/kg (£2,674 & £3,101).
Further OTM Limousin steers to 392p/kg for a 707kg animal from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay and 390p/kg for a same breed steer from Mr W J P Julian; the latter being tied with a UTM Limousin steer from Messrs R G & J M Prowse of St Allen, Truro at the same money.
Cull Cows
Good numbers of Cull Cows through the ring, with another solid trade.
Top for a good middle-aged Limousin cow from Messrs W T Key & Son of St Breock, Wadebridge at 314p/kg, followed by a Blonde cow from Messrs E T Noy & Sons of Porkellis, Helston at 295p/kg and another Limo from Messrs Key at 290p/kg.
A British Blue cow in from Mr L Jose of Allet, Truro sold away at 284p/kg, tied with the top dairy type of the day being a Friesian cow from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro.
A Limousin cow from Messrs R A F, R M & R A Roberts of Gweek, Helston sold away at 282p/kg, with another Blonde from Messrs Noy at 278p/kg thereafter, tied with a Blue cow from Mr P Mann of Falmouth.
Further dairy types to 233p/kg for another Friesian from Mr Heller and a Friesian cow from Messrs W C & W R Martin of St Buryan, Penzance at 231p/kg.
Store Cattle
A light entry to kick of 2026 with good trade all round topping at £2295 for a smart 19-month-old Charolais steer on behalf of Messrs W F Palmer & Son of Ruan High Lanes, Truro with Messrs Palmer going on to sell further Charolais to £2200 twice and £1950.
Mr P L Batten of St Columb sold a trio of 2-year-old Herefords to £2290, whilst Mr T M Batten also of St Columb sold a pair of Herefords of the same age to £2210.
Young steers in from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son of Hewaswater, St Austell sold to £1200 for Herefords and £965 for Shorthorns.
Heifers topping at £1195 for a pair of 2-year-old Angus on behalf of Messrs W C & W R Martin of St Buryan, Penzance followed by young Hereford heifers from Messrs S A & B M Bennett & Son to £960.
Rearing Calves
A smart entry of calves to report, with a fast trade to the ringside packed full of active buyers.
A run of 14 super calves from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston topped at £595 twice for a pair of 2 m.o Blue bulls, with their similar aged Limousin bull following at £575.
A classy month-old Charolais bull from Messrs B & J Bailey of Veryan, Truro flew away to £550, tied with another slightly older Blue bull from Messrs Bray at the same money.
A pair of 2 m.o Charolais bulls realised £540 and £535, the former from Messrs Bailey and the latter the top of a run of 13 from Messrs M J & R M Tremayne of Constantine, Falmouth.
Month-old Angus bull calves to £535 for Messrs T F Sampson & Sons of St Newlyn East, Newquay followed by the best month-old Blue bull from Mr N Monies of Zennor, St Ives at £530 and another Charolais bull from Messrs Tremayne at £500.
Top Hereford bull at one month old to £450 from Mr V M Moyle of Halvasso, Penryn.
Heifers just as strong a trade, with Messrs Bray marketing their stronger 3 m.o calves at £495 for a Limo, £470 for a Simmental, £460 and £455 for Blues and an Angus.
Strong Charolais heifers from Messrs Tremayne parting away at £450 and month-old Angus heifers to £305 from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East, Newquay.
A trio of cracking 3 m.o Charolais weaned heifer calves from Messrs J & S Trembath of Gurnards Head, Zennor raced away to £720.
Prime Hoggs
A decent entry of finished hoggs for the first market of 2026.
Prices firmer and several stand-out hoggs seeing very strong top prices peaking at £181 for a 63kg butchers hogg from Miss L Monk , sold to Stillmans of Taunton.
Setting the premium at 362kg for a smart 45.2kg hogg from Mr J D Couch sold to J V Richards Ltd.
Cull Ewes
A good entry forward to start off 2026 with prices soaring to £230 for a cracking pair of Charollais ewes from Miss L Monk of Truro.
Texels to £191 for a pair from Ms R S Frank of Truro. Suffolks to £180 again from Miss Monk, and then £177 & £165 for Mr J D Couch of Lostwithiel.
Texel X to £168.50 and £161 for pens full from Mr S G Collins of St Newlyn East, Newquay; then £156, £155 & £150 from Mrs A Shazell of St Columb.
Hampshire Down to £146 from Mr T Blake of St Stephen. Lleyn to £145 from Mr D Searle of Wendron, Helston. Dorset to £142 from Mr D J Lobb of St Austell. North of England Mules to £140 for Mr E Tuckett of Par.
Rams to £149 for a mixed pen of rams from Caerhays Farms of Caerhays, St Austell; £148 for a Suffolk ram from Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road, Truro; and £145 for a Beltex ram from Miss A H Payne of Cubert, Newquay.
The overall average for the entire cull section was £136/head topping at £230.
Store Sheep
A short entry but firm trade topping at £129.50 on behalf of Messrs J Lutey & Sons of Grampound Road, Truro.
Also at £129.50 was a strong single from Miss A Keyte of Castallack, Penzance, whilst Mr S P Bache of Mount Hawke, Truro sold a good pen to £127.50.
Mr and Mrs S G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay sold a good pen to £123.50, whilst Mrs A Shazell of St Columb sold a forward single to £122.
