Prime Cattle

Despite the recent winding back of the deadweight prices, the Truro Liveweight Trade continues to forge on at a pace no easier than recent weeks and a cracking trade seen for all on offer.

Top pence-per-kilo to 420p/kg (£2,600) for a stunning 619kg Limousin heifer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro, (pictured on the front cover) followed by a good young 567kg Parthenais heifer from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro at 400p/kg (£2,268).

A pair of topping weighty Blues from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay saw a storming trade, with his 754kg heifer at 396p/kg (£2,986) and his 774kg steer topping that section at 386p/kg and also achieving the top pounds-per-head of £2,988.

A good 632kg non-FABBL Angus steer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne parted away at 380p/kg (£2,402), another good 542kg Parthenais heifer from Messrs Williams then traded at 370p/kg (£2,005) and Messrs Pellow sold their second 620kg Angus steer at 366p/kg (£2,269) thereafter.

Cull Cows

A good selection of cull cows forward this week, with a respectable 43 passing through the ring.

A smart 480kg NON-FABBL Hereford cow from Mr P Harvey of St Austell topped the section at 332p/kg followed by a good NON-FABBL Blue cow from Mr P A Mann of Mawnan Smith at 318p/kg and a NON-FABBL cow-aged Devon steer from Mr R Pearman of St Ervan, Wadebridge realised 304p/kg.

Further beef type cows to 298p/kg for a NON-FABBL Hereford from Mr A Gilbert of Kehelland, Camborne, with another Blue from Mr Mann next at 290p/kg, which was tied with a South Devon cow from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro at the same money.

A Shorthorn cow from Mr R J Trezise of Morvah, Penzance went under the hammer at 288p/kg, a cracking Charolais cow from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay was one bid behind at 287p/kg and a South Devon cow from Mr R D Gendall of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston one bid behind again at 286p/kg.

Still tight on dairy types, nevertheless a weighty 828kg NON-FABBL Friesian cow from Messrs J H Hawkey & Son of St Newlyn East, Newquay parted away at 280p/kg and top cow pounds-per-head of £2,318.

A lone NON-FABBL Cull Bull being a 1025kg South Devon from Mrs J C Williams of St Clement, Truro realised 227p/kg and £2,327.

Store Cattle

Numbers lighter this week and trade holding firm in line with the finished prices.

Heifers leading the way this week to £2050 for a 2-year-old Blonde X from Mr J E G Brewer of St Merryn, Padstow followed by a 30-month-old South Devon from Mr E G Williams of Nancegollan at £1725 and a 19-month-old British Blue from Messrs A D and J A Bray of St Martin, Helston at £1595.

A 31-month-old Limousin from Neil Rowe Farming Limited, The Lizard realised £1445, followed by a single 2-year-old Hereford from Mr P Harvey of St Austell at £1405.

A good trade for younger heifers selling to £1660 for the choice pair of 15-month-old Herefords from Mr R N Hosking of Sancreed, Penzance, who went on to sell a further pair of South Devons of the same age at £1650, then a single South Devon at £1440.

A very smart 9-month-old Angus heifer from Messrs R G Keast & Son of Allet, Truro parted away at £1405.

Steers selling to £1965 for a 17-month-old Angus from Messrs R G Keast & Son, followed by a trio of 2-year-old Herefords from Mr J E G Brewer at £1960 and a single Blonde from Mr Brewer at £1945.

A 31-month-old South Devon from Mr E G Williams realised £1595, followed by Mr G D Thomas of St Ives with his single 2-year-old Blue at £1515.

Younger steers topping at £1695 for a grand bunch of six 13-month-old South Devons from Mr J L Sampson of St Buryan, Penzance, whilst Messrs A D & J A Bray sold a single 12-month-old Limousin at £1445, with Mr K M Wilkin of Mount Hawke not far behind at £1385 for a pair of 14-month-old Stabilisers.

A 4-year-old Pedigree South Devon Breeding bull from Mr R Woollacott, Penryn sold for £2850.

Rearing Calves

Numbers remain tight, but with plenty of buyers in attendance trade would look buoyant for all on offer.

Just a handful of young stirks on offer seeing a bunch of three British Blue x heifers flying away to £790 on behalf of Messrs S M & J Blee from St Martin, Helston closely followed by their pair of British Blue x steers selling for £785.

A run of 3-4 month old stirks from Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen, St Austell sold well with a pair of Limousin x steers at £702 with their Limousin x heifer making £528.

The young milk calves sold to £505 for a British Blue x bull from Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin, Helston who also sold a Limousin x bull for £460, and their Simmental x heifer away at £385.

Further British Blue x bulls to £380 for Messrs C J & P H George from Tresillian, Truro with another at £320, and their British Blue x heifers to top at £360.

Best of a small entry of Hereford x bulls to £285 for Messrs T J & R Mann from Gulval with another at £250. Friesian bull calves looked well sold to £245 for Messrs M & J Rowe from Ashton.

Best of the heifer calves to £485 for a Limousin x sold by Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey from St Keverne, Helston who also sold another Limousin x heifer for £430, and a Simmental x heifer raced away to £445 for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston and Messrs W Marsh & Son sold a British Blue x heifer for £395.

Prime Hoggs

A small entry of hoggs, selling to £148.00 for 55.5kg hoggs from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge sold to Mr L Cleave of Highampton.

Prime Lambs

A similar trade on the week, with slightly improved overall averages.

A pen of blocky Texels from Messrs C D Greenaway & Sons of St Issey set the bar at 339p and £149/head, sold to J V Richards Ltd. Also achieving £149.00 for a single 51.5kg lamb from Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston.

Cull Ewes

A super trade for cull ewes again this week as the Festival approaches and an increased number forward. Perhaps fewer of the best ewes on offer, but excellent trade for those present.

Top call was £209 for a good conformation medium bodied Charollais from Messrs J Lutey & Sons of Grampound Road, Truro.

Further Charollais to £200 for Mr C J Allen of Penwithick, St Austell; £167 for Mr Lutey; and £159 for Mr J D Couch of Lostwithiel. Suffolks to £197 for a tremendous ewe from Mr K R Williams of Tehidy, Camborne.

Further pens of mixed breeds from Mr Lutey to £168 and £164. Suffolk Mules to £161 for Mr A S P Wright of Penhallow, Truro; and £158for a big pen of 15 from Mr G W Coon of Mevagissey.

Leicester cross to £160.50 from Messrs S B and M Tonkin of Par. Dorsets to £159 for Mr D J Lobb of St Austell. Rams to £150 for a Charollais from Messrs R & J Bailey of Frogpool, Truro.

Sheep (2T) to £136 for a pair of Lleyn x from Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston, and £129 for a Texel x from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge.

Store Sheep

A fair entry of store sheep comprised largely of couples from a number of different vendors, with the well presented continental outfits leading the way.

Top price of £240.00 for a single from Sturmans Livestock of Wadebridge, who also topped the double section at £305.00.

Classy single couples from Messrs A J & S T Richards of Helston realised £235.00 thrice and £230.00, with Messrs Richards then topping the store hogg section at £146.50 for a pair of Suffolk x ewe lambs and a further pen to £120.50.
