Prime Cattle

Yet another good entry of Prime Cattle forward, with the liveweight trade holding firm and some old faces seen back in the ring.

Top of the day to a very healthy 415p/kg (£2,287) for a 551kg Limousin steer from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro, with their second same-aged Limo steer at 406p/kg (£2,294).

The best Limousin steer from Messrs T A & A M Wills of St Erme, Truro parted away at 375p/kg (£2,130) and their second same-breed steer at 370p/kg (£2,017).

A good pair of weighty Angus steers from Mr P J Harvey of Coombe, Truro saw a flying trade with the first 770kg animal at 358p/kg, also claiming the top pounds-per-head of £2,757, and the second 729kg animal at 352p/kg (£2,566).

Heifers saw a similarly settled trade with top of 410p/kg for a 535kg Limousin from Mr C P Rundle of Golant, Fowey, with a Limousin heifer from Mr Harvey next at 385p/kg.

These were closely followed by a run of Blue heifers from Messrs S S Parker & Son of Callestick, Truro with prices at 385p/kg and 380p/kg twice to name but a few.

Messrs E, M & S Beale of Porthtowan, Truro saw their pair of OTM heifers away at 374p/kg for a Limousin and 366p/kg for a Blue.

Cull Cows

Still good prices being seen in the cull ring for the best sorts forward, including both FABBL and non-FABBL animals.

A 713kg Charolais cow in from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro, known for their regular high-quality Prime Cattle consignments, sold away at 298p/kg and top pounds-per-head of £2,125.

A 679kg South Devon cow from Messrs D W & N J Barker of St Mawgan, Newquay was next forward at 280p/kg, with a Blue cow from Mr W E Hosken of Manaccan, Helston at 266p/kg and a non-FABBL Simmental cow from Mr M A Semmens of Gorran, St Austell sold for 259p/kg.

A pair of cows tied next at 250p/kg being a South Devon from Messrs W S Gay & Son of St Allen, Truro and a nonFABBL Simmental from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an Dinas, St Columb Major.

Very light numbers of dairy types forward to 208p/kg for a Friesian from Messrs A D & J A Bray of St Martin, Helston and a second from the same farm at 202p/kg thereafter.

Store Cattle

A light, varied entry through the ring this week and perhaps a slight easing of the prices in line with the finished trade. Steers selling to £1920 for a 33-month-old Hereford on behalf of Mr W R Beard of Penzance, who went on to sell a trio of 20-month-old Angus at £1825.

Mr W E Hosken of Manaccan, Helston sold a fine 20-month-old Blue at £1795, followed closely by a 2-year-old South Devon from Mr M Lenton of Liskeard at £1780, with Mr P Harvey of St Austell marketing a 2-year-old Hereford at £1745.

20-month-old Angus from Mr W E Hosken realising £1440, whilst Limousins from Neil Rowe Farming Ltd of The Lizard sold to £1415, which was also achieved by 2-year-old Herefords from Mr P Harvey.

Younger steers selling to £1815 for a superb 14-month-old South Devon from Mr J L Sampson of St Buryan, Penzance followed by five Limousins of the same age from Mr A S Ball of Bodmin at £1640.

Mr C Weldhen of St Columb also achieved £1640 for a cracking bunch of six 1-year-old South Devons, with Mr Weldhen going on to sell Simmentals to £1500 and further South Devons to £1445.

Further young steers to £1400 for Mr J L Sampson, £1390 for Mr A S Ball and £1380 for Mr C Weldhen.

Heifers topping at £1480 for a single 2-year-old Blue for Mr I G Michell of Helston, who also sold a pair of Angus at £1470, whilst Mr W E Hosken sold a pair of Angus to £1440.

Mr R S T Halliday of Liskeard sold a trio of 2-year-old Angus to £1415 and a 31-month-old Angus to £1400, whilst the Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly sold a pair of 38-month-old Limousins to £1390.

Younger heifers selling to £1460 for five smart Limousins from Mr A S Ball, with a further trio to £1395, whilst a pair of 9-month-old Limousins from F G Gluyas and Partners of Camborne realised £1335.

Cows and calves selling to £2120 for a young Simmental outfit from Mr I G Michell, whilst Mr T Wilton of Grampound Road sold a Devon outfit to £1980.

A 19-month-old rearing Angus bull from Mr W R Beard achieved £1875.

Rearing Calves

A decent entry of calves, with the easing of the beef trade, not surprising to see the trade less than recent historic highs.

Leading the way was Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey from St Keverne, Helston marketing their very smart Limousin x bulls to £710 at under one month old and further bulls to £620 and £515 and also topping the heifer section again with a Limousin x heifer at £465.

Further Limousin x bulls to £495, £485 and £440 for Mr N Monies from Zennor, and Simmental x bulls to £485 for Messrs A D & J A Bray from St Martin, Helston best of the Hereford x bulls selling to £450 for Messrs L Wherry & Son from Sancreed who also sold another Hereford x bull for £420.

Very young British Blue x bulls to £410 for Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, Truro who sold further young Limousin x bulls for £375 & £360.

Aberdeen Angus x bulls sold to £320 twice firstly for Mr W R Davey from Probus and Messrs A D & J A Bray.

Further Limousin x heifers to £360 for Mr W H F Harvey from Lanivet with Hereford x heifers to £310 again for Mr W R Davey who also sold Aberdeen Angus x heifers to £288 with further Aberdeen Angus x heifers to £265 for Messrs L M & C G Vian from Wendron.

Prime Hoggs

Numbers reducing weekly though still plenty of bite in the trade for well finished Continentals.

Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, Wadebridge sold a pair of 48kg Texel X to 285p/kg, with a further pen for the same vendor topping pounds per head section at £152.

Mr M Hill of Truro sold a 66kg single hogg to £148.00, followed by a fleshy 76kg single from Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro at £145.00.

Prime Lambs

The new season lamb trade has taken a hard knock on the week, as reported in centres across the county.

That said, Truro’s leading prices £15/head higher than other SW centres this week.

The leaner light weight lambs were less sought after, and would benefit from additional finishing.

Topping at £155.50 were a superb trio of butcher choice 48.6kg lambs from Messrs P J Grylls & Son of Truro, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Setting the premium to 332p/kg were a cracking pair of blocky 44kg lambs from Mr T D Retallick of St Columb, sold to R J Trevarthen of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A good entry forward that was met with a lively trade for all on offer, witnessing increased top prices and averages on the week.

Good conformation Continentals leading the way with a grand Texel ewe from Miss R S Frank of Chacewater, Truro setting the bar at £239.00.

Further Texels to £228.00 for Messrs Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road; £218.00 for Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay; £207.00 for Miss Frank; and £195.00 for Mr Coad.

Charollais to £219.00 for Miss L Monk of Chacewater, Truro; and £211.00 for Messrs R J Vincent & Son of Blackwater, Truro.

Suffolks to £196.00 and £177.00 for Mr W Watson of St Martin, Helston.

Zwartbles to £191.00 for Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb.

Rams to £235.00 for a big Zwartbles again Messrs Hooper, followed by a single Suffolk from Mr M Hill of Threemilestone, Truro.

Store Sheep

A light entry selling to £102.50 on behalf of Messrs A P & S R Hooper of St Columb, followed by lambs from Mr C E Williams of Mullion, Helston at £94 and Mr R S Dawe of Grampound at £86.

Single couples selling to £215 on behalf of Mr V R Barrett of Truro, with Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston close behind with single couples at £210 and £200.

Doubles from Mrs Baxter selling to £278 and £250.
