Prime Cattle

A sensational entry of Prime Cattle this week, with the 30 passing through the ring all selling on a solid trade and no shortage of buyer demand.

Topping the day was a smart 514kg Limousin heifer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay at 398p/kg and £2,046, followed by a 559kg 15 month old Parthenais heifer from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro at 392p/kg (£2,191).

Steers jointly topped by the best 680kg Limousin of a run from J B Old Farms of Treyarnon Bay, Padstow at 380p/kg (£2,584) and also a good young 592kg Simmental steer from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance at the same money and £2,064.

Mr Rogers then sold his younger 546kg Simmental steer at 378p/kg, tied with a 651kg Limousin steer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at a resultant £2,461. Further quality Limousin steers from J B Old Farms at 372p/kg (£2,656), 351p/kg (£2,359), 345p/kg twice (£2,377 & £2,757), 335p/kg (£2,174) and 310p/kg (£2,430).

A 594kg Blue steer from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro realised 360p/kg (£2,138) and the best 654kg Blue steer from Messrs M D Curtis & Son of Gunwalloe, Helston sold for 355p/kg (£2,322).

Further good heifers to 370p/kg (£2,338) for a Limousin from Mr Julian, a good Limousin heifer from Miss S P Gribble of Lanner, Redruth went under the hammer at 368p/kg and a 650kg South Devon heifer from McCardell & Thompson Ltd parted away at 362p/kg (£2,353).

Cull Cows

The biggest cull entry in the South West at Truro this week, with a total 52 head passing through the sale ring on a fast trade from start to finish.

Top of the day to 343p/kg for a cracking Stabiliser cow from Messrs J N & M Miles of St Mawes, Truro, with their other same-breed cows at 328p/kg, 315p/kg, 296p/kg twice, 294p/kg, 292p/kg and 290p/kg.

A cow-aged Salers heifer from Mr D P Osborne of Nancledra, Penzance sold at 312p/kg, with a Blue cow from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro away at 301p/kg, followed by an Angus cow from Mr T Kendall of Mevagissey, St Austell one bid behind at 300p/kg.

Another Blue cow from Messrs Dustow selling at 296p/kg, another Angus from Mr Kendall looking well sold at 278p/kg and a weighty 833kg Angus cow from Mr G F K Thomas of St Agnes, Truro next at 275p/kg (£2,291), tied with a Continental cow from Mr P L Bloomfield of Altarnun (£2,104).

A good 770kg Devon cow from Mr Osborne traded at 272p/kg (£2,094), tied with a Charolais from Mrs Bruce of Constantine, Falmouth, with Mrs Bruce also then going on to top the pounds-per-head with her 905kg Simmental cow at 260p/kg and £2,353.

Limited dairy types topped at 262p/kg for a Friesian cow from McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay and their second at 250p/kg thereafter.

Store Cattle

A fair entry and a lift in trade, topping at £2050 for steers for a 23-month-old Blue on behalf of Messrs B H, G J & F B W Ely of St Keverne, Helston, with Messrs Ely going on to sell 21-month-old Limousins to £1810, 2-year-old Herefords to £1800 and £1780 and further Limousins to £1605.

Cracking 1½-year-old steers in from Mr C J Andrew of St Austell topping at £2025 for fleshy Blues, with further Blues to £1880 and Limousins to £1875, whilst the Tresco Estate, Isles of Scilly sold a single 2-year-old Limousin to £2000. Mr H G Dark of Cury Cross Lanes, Helston marketed a quality 21-month-old Blue at £1915.

Younger steers selling to £1705 for a pair of 15-month-old South Devons on behalf of Mr W L Rowell of Liskeard followed by a 13-month-old Limousin from Messrs A R & T S Hooper of Shortlanesend, Truro at £1680. Shorthorns from Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell selling to £1650 and £1600.

Heifers topping at £2170 for a sublime 28-month-old Blue on behalf of Messrs R G Olver & Son of St Stephen, St Austell with a further pair from Messrs Olver at £2100.

1½-year-old heifers to £1530 on behalf of Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell with a further trio to £1475, whilst Messrs D C & W A Thomas of Tresillian, Truro sold seven super 21-monthold Blues to £1425.

Younger heifers topping at £1680 for a 10-month-old Limousin on behalf of Messrs A R & T S Hooper, a further trio to £1400 followed by Shorthorns from Mr A J Jelbert of Mitchell at £1305. A single 15-month-old Limousin from Mr P C J Bennetts of Helston realised £1250.

A 32-month-old pedigree Devon bull from Mr R Dean of Par, St Austell realised £2100, whilst cows and calves topped at £3040 for a Shorthorn outfit on behalf of Mr A J Jelbert with further outfits from Mr Jelbert to £2320, £1980 and £1970.

Rearing Calves

Another fantastic trade, with all calves being hotly contested by buyers.

The milk calves reached the dizzy heights of £580 for a young British Blue x bull sold by Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East, Newquay who sold further British Blue x bulls to £455 and their Aberdeen Angus x bull away at £480 and going on to see a sharp trade with their heifers seeing British Blue x making £430 and £395.

Hereford x bulls sold to £565 for Messrs J A & L S M Tripconey from St Keverne, Helston who also sold a Limousin x bull for £555, and their Limousin x heifers making £440 twice and another at £375.

Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston sold their Simmental x bulls for £540 and £515 and Simmental x heifers for £395 and £345. Mr P J Harvey from Coombe sold a British Blue x bull for £510.

The best of the Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £495 for Mr T F Sampson from St Newlyn East, Newquay who sold further Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £480.

Further Hereford x bulls making £490 on behalf of Mr A J Thomas from Penryn and Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, Truro sold their best British Blue x bull for £490 and a Limousin x bull making £470.

Further Hereford x bulls to £465 for Messrs W H F Harvey from Lanivet with many other vendors marketing bulls between £400 to £450.

Leading the way in the heifer section was a Limousin x heifer making £450 for Messrs W Marsh & Son from St Stephen, St Austell who sold another Limousin x heifer at £465 and going on to sell a handful of stronger weaned calves seeing a pair of Limousin x steers make £680 each and a British Blue x heifer at £600.

Prime Lambs

A good entry forward and sharper trade.

The heavier lambs in high demand and some incredibly strong prices. Topping the lambs at £176.00 for a pair of 62kg butchers lambs from Messrs B N & C Hoskins of Silverwell, Truro sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Closely followed by a 48.2kg Dorset lamb at £175.00 for Messrs J & I Parfitt of Lanteglos by Fowey, purchased by J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Setting the premium to 364p/kg for a grand pen of 45.5kg Texels from Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro, sold to R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Cull Ewes

A similar steady trade to last week, with overall averages increased to £127.00 right across the board.

Top call of £181.00 of a pen of medium bodied Texels from Mr P McAnulty of St Austell. This was followed by a Blue Texels x at £177.00 from Cregan Gate Partners of Grampound Road.

Zwartbles to £166.00 for a medium ewe from Messrs R J Vincent & Son of Blackwater Truro, with further Texels to £160.00 & £155.00 from the same vendor. Suffolk x to £160.00 & £150.00 for Mr K Rule of St Austell. Suffolk x Mules to £148.00 & £145.00 for pens from Mr A S P Wright of Truro.

Lleyns to £138.00 for Mr & Mrs D Searle of Helston. Dorsets to £136.00 again for Messrs Vincent. A handful of sheep (2T) forward topping at £128.00 for a Blue faced Leicester from Miss A Payne of Cubert.

Store Sheep

A small but varied entry which saw New Season store lambs top at £150.50 for a heavy trio on behalf of Messrs J & I Parfitt of Lanteglos-by-Fowey, followed by the best of a smart consignment from Mr J M Hinkley of Rejerrah, Truro at £122.50, with further lots of Dorsets from Mr Hinkley at £116.50 and £106.

Miss S Williams of Sennen, Penzance sold a pair of store hogs at £118. Full mouth breeding ewes in again from Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, topping at £159 twice, with further pens to £141 and £136.
