Prime Cattle

A brilliant entry of Prime Cattle to report, with the numbers and quality presented speaking for themselves, with all 35 forward selling on a roaring trade.

Top price away at 401p/kg (£2,502) for the best cracking 624kg Limousin heifer from Mr M A Grigg from Lower Sticker, St Austell, with a further pair of quality same-breed heifers from this vendor tied at 400p/kg (£2,628 & £2,620).

Another pair of classy bullocks tied at 398p/kg next being a 717kg Blue steer from Messrs V C & W G M Cock of Newbridge, Penance at a whopping £2,854 and a 584kg Limousin heifer from Mr W J P Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at £2,324.

Again another pair of bullocks tied at 388p/kg being a 674kg Limousin steer from Mr Julian again this time at £2,615 and a 671kg Angus steer from Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green, Camborne at £2,603.

Further quality Limousins from Mr Julian saw his 672kg steer part away for 385p/kg (£2,587), his 564kg heifer at 380p/kg (£2,143) and a 603kg Limousin steer from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at the same pence-perkilo and £2,291.

Top pounds-per-head awarded to a weighty 870kg Hereford steer from Messrs Cock at 329p/kg and £2,862.

Cull Cows

A respectable entry passing through the Cull Ring, with top price going to a quality Limousin cow from Mrs J Julian of Summercourt, Newquay at 379p/kg, followed by a pair of good cow-aged Blue steers from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro at 319p/kg and 307p/kg.

Next up was a run of cow-aged Hereford steers and heifers from Mr A W Treloar of Trenear, Wendron, with prices at 306p/kg, 299p/kg, 298p/kg 292p/kg, 285p/kg and 274p/kg.

A pair of Hereford cows from Messrs S J Rowe & Son of Hayle realised 289p/kg and 284p/kg and a South Devon cow from Mr P J Roberts of Threeburrows, Truro parted away for 288p/kg. Messrs E V Hosking & Son of Laity, Wendron marketed their Charolais cow at 264p/kg and many other good beef types forward too numerous to mention.

Dairy types topped at 266p/kg for a good Friesian cow from Messrs C J & P H George of Tresillian, Truro, with another pair from the same stable at 244p/kg and 238p/kg thereafter.

Store Cattle

Good numbers forward and a smashing trade from start to finish topping at £2330 for quality 17-month-old Limousin steers on behalf of Messrs D Trewern & Son of Porthcurno, Penzance.

Steers then selling to £2255 for a 2-year-old Limousin on behalf of Mr A W Treloar of Trenear, with further 17-month-old Limousins thereafter again from Messrs D Trewern & Son at £2220, whilst Messrs R & D P Rule of Mawla sold a 1½-year-old Blue steer to £2000.

Messrs J H Pellow & Sons of Carnhell Green sold a single 17-month-old Angus to £1940 with the same Vendor going on to sell further steers to £1720 and £1685, whilst McCardell & Thompson Ltd of Summercourt, Newquay sold 20-month-old Blues to £1915 and a pair of 21-month-old Anguses’ to £1740.

Younger steers selling to £1555 on behalf of Messrs R & D P Rule, followed by a 10-month-old Limousin from Messrs L J Richards & Son of United Downs, Redruth at £1545. A single 11-month-old South Devon steer from Mr W L Rowell of St Keyne, Liskeard parted away at £1425.

The top price heifer being a 2-year-old Aberdeen Angus from N H Semmens & Son Ltd of St Levan, Penzance sold to £1710, followed by a 2-year-old Charolais at £1680 on behalf of Mrs C Goodwin of Portscatho, Truro.

A grand bunch of seven 20-month-old Blues from McCardell & Thompson Ltd realised £1650, followed by four 2-year-old Anguses from N H Semmens & Son Ltd at £1560.

Younger heifers topping at £1650 for a single Blue on behalf of Messrs R & D P Rule, whilst Messrs D Trewern & Son sold a 15-month-old South Devon heifer to £1410.

Messrs M G & T A Tuckett of Par, St Austell sold four 15-month-old Herefords to £1115, followed by Messrs Amiss & Ayres of Helston at £950 for a pair of 15-month-old Herefords.

Gwealavellan Partners of Gwithian were back again this week with a quality run of 40 four to five month old Blue x steers & heifers with top prices at £840 for steers and £765 for heifers – 35 more from the same farm booked for next week.

Cows and calves selling to £2420 for a Hereford x on behalf of Messrs S J Rowe & Son of Hayle with a further lot from the same Vendor achieving £2400.

Rearing Calves

Given recent historic highs it is not surprising to see values dip slightly, with plenty of buyers in attendance, still competing well for all on offer.

Top price of the day of £645 was achieved by an Aberdeen Angus x bull sold by Mr W R Davey from Probus who also went on to sell a Hereford x heifer for £415.

Best of the British Blue x bulls to £595 for Messrs J A Sweet & Partners from St Newlyn East, Newquay who also sold another British Blue x bull for £460, and going on to top the heifer section with their best British Blue x heifer achieving £455 and another at £425.

A nice Charolais x bull sold for £530 for Messrs B & J Bailey from Veryan who also sold a Charolais x heifer for £430. Further British Blue x bulls to £515 for Messrs C Thomas & Son from Penryn who sold further British Blue x bulls at £505, £485 and their British Blue x heifer making £410.

Messrs R M & C D Rundle from Mevagissey sold a very young run of quality Hereford x calves seeing bulls at £500, £485, £475 and their heifers at £365, £362, £355, £350 and three making £345.

Best of the Limousin x bulls to £490 for Sixty Acres Ltd from Zelah, Truro. Just a handful of weaned calves on offer from Messrs A & B Pascoe from North Country, Redruth selling a bunch of five Limousin x steers for £755 and a pen of five Limousin x heifers for £650, looking well sold.

Prime Lambs

A good entry forward and fiery trade, seeing eleven pens achieve over £170 and an overall average of £162.50/head.

The first of four pens from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of Castle-An-Dinas leading the way seeing their best pick trio soar to £196, purchased by Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

A further large consignment of lambs from Mr J C Ball of St Merryn, with his 56.2kg heavyweights achieving £187, also bought by Stillmans Ltd.

Following closely at £185 and setting the premium to 389p/kg were a smart pair of shapely 47.5kg lambs from Messrs T B & M B Osborne of St Eval, sold to J V Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Prime Hoggs

Just a handful of tail-end hoggs, with prices peaking at £138 for a pen of 60.4kg heavies from Mr P G Gilbert of St Buryan. Leading average of 248p/kg for a trio of 53.6kg heavies from Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan (£133/ head).

Cull Ewes

Good numbers for this week, and thank you to vendors for pre-booking your entries (big and small) it really does pay off.

Absolutely super trade with increased averages and punchy top prices yet again. The trade is currently averaging £30/head up on this time last year, and at record summer levels.

Topping at £220 this week was the best of a run of quality Texels from Mr & Mrs J A Morphew of Wadebridge. Charollais a very close second to £218 for a cracking ewe from Miss Laura Monk of Chacewater, Truro followed by a tremendous bunch from Messrs W J Hicks & Son of St Merryn at £215.

Further Texels to £200 for Mrs A Shazell of St Columb; £199 again for Mr & Mrs Morphew; £196 and £195.50 for Messrs C D Greenaway & Sons of St Issey; £178 again for Mr & Mrs Morphew and £168 again for Mrs Shazell.

Further Charollais and Charollais x types to £191 again for Messrs Hicks; and £180 for Mr M Monk of Chacewater, Truro. Zwartbles to £160 for a medium bodied pen from Messrs A P & S R Hooper of St Columb.

A run of Devon & Cornwall Longwool from Mr E M C Bax of Wadebridge topping at £160 for his best trio of cull ewes. A short entry of cull rams this week, topping at £172 for a pen full of quality Devon & Cornwall Longwool again from Mr Bax followed by £160 for a pair of shearlings from the same vendor.

A single Texel from Messrs R Gregor & Son of St Mawgan. Other sheep (2 tooth) to £140 for a Charollais from Mr Bax and £136 for a pen full from Messrs Gregor.

Store Sheep

Lighter in number but still a fair entry which met a stand on trade topping at £141 for a fleshy single on behalf of Mrs B Baxter of Porkellis, Helston followed by five close to finish continentals on behalf of Mr & Mrs J A Morphew of Penrose, Wadebridge.

Mr A G Tomlinson or Portscatho, Truro sold a pen of ten good quality stores to £136.50, followed by Messrs AP and S R Hooper of St Columb with their framey ten realising £103.50. Most lambs selling in excess of £100 and overall average of £111 all in.
