Prime Cattle

Another great showing of Prime Cattle forward, with an abundance of quality on offer and the majority of animals being pre-entered which no doubt works to Vendors’ advantage.

A storming run of top quality Limousin bullocks forward yet again from Mr M A Grigg of Lower Sticker, St Austell with steer prices at 400p/kg (£2,964), 395p/kg (£2,627), 390p/kg (£2,668) and 370p/kg for a cracking 812kg animal which topped the pounds-per-head at £3,004.

A good young 618kg Parthenais steer from Messrs W H & L M Williams & Son of Allet, Truro parted away at 372p/kg, closely followed by a pair of Simmental steers from Mr M D Rogers of St Hilary, Penzance at 370p/kg and 369p/kg.

A South Devon steer from Mrs S J Tune of St Columb realised 367p/kg and a 791kg Limousin steer from Mr J M Venning of St Stephen, St Austell went under the hammer at 364p/kg (£2,879).

Heifers to 390p/kg (£2,828) for a classy single 725kg Limousin from Mr M A Grigg, with the best Limousin heifer from Mr R B P Nicholls of St Buryan, Penzance at 375p/kg thereafter.

Another good Limousin heifer from Mr Venning traded at 361p/kg (£2,509) and the best 717kg Hereford heifer from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay featured next at 348p/kg (£2,495).

Cull Cows

A good entry of mainly beef types forward, with trade for all on offer looking solid.

Top call of 350p/kg for a cow-aged Devon steer from Mr R G Thomas of Feock, Truro, followed by a South Devon cow from Mr P J Roberts of Threeburrows, Truro at 330p/kg.

A Red Poll cow from Mr C T K Trembath of Carnyorth, Penzance traded at 325p/kg, with a Limousin cow from Messrs A T & S E Dunn of Helston at 297p/kg and Messrs E V Hosking & Son of Laity, Wendron saw their run of Limousin cows achieve 295p/kg and 282p/kg twice.

Dairy types topped by a pair of Friesian cows from Messrs J A Sweet & Partners of St Newlyn East at 193p/kg and 184p/kg, with a Friesian cow from Mr R G Rowe of London Apprentice at 185p/kg.

Store Cattle

A strong entry comprising large numbers of forward Continental steers selling to a top call of £2,160 for a pair of stunning 14-month-old Limousins from Messrs A T & S E Dunn of Helston.

Messrs Dunn sold further young Limousins to £1,970, £1,865 and £1,745 resulting in an overall average of £1,900 for their fifteen sensational 1-year-old Limousin steers.

Five 2-year-old Angus steers from Messrs W W James & Sons of Sancreed, Penzance parted away at £2,155, with a Blue from the same vendor achieving £2,090 then further Angusto £1,960, whilst a 17-month-old South Devon steer from Mr P J Roberts of Truro realised £1,950.

Mr K Bottrell of Newbridge, Penzance sold four 2-year-old Hereford steers to £1,875 followed by a pair of smart 16-month-old Limousins for Mr J F Rowe of Menabilly, Par at £1,840.

Messrs Dunns 1-year-old previously mentioned, younger steers then selling to £1,640 and £1,480 on behalf of Mr J F Rowe, with 1-year-old Blues from Messrs S J Dustow & Son of Ladock, Truro also at £1,480.

Many good quality steers looking well sold thereafter being too numerous to mention.

Heifers topping at £1,570 for a pair of 20-month-old Limousins on behalf of Mr R T Dunn of Par, St Austell with further Blues from the same vendor to £1,450 whilst N H Semmens & Son Ltd of St Levan, Penzance, sold a pair of 26-month-old Herefords to £1,535.

A single 17-month-old South Devon from Mr P J Roberts traded at £1,330 followed by 1½-year-old Blues from Messrs S J Dustow & Son at £1,260 thrice.

Younger heifers topping at £1,510 for a pair of 1-year-old Limousins from Mr J F Rowe, whilst Messrs A T & S E Dunn sold a pair of Limousins of the same age at £1,425.

Cows and calves topping at £2,750 for a superior South Devon outfit on behalf of Mr P J Roberts, who also sold an Angus outfit to £2,480, whilst Mr B R Wynter of St Buryan, Penzance, sold cracking Simmental outfits to £2,680 and £2,550.

Rearing Calves

Another good entry of calves, with plenty of buyers in attendance seeing a solid trade for all on offer.

Best of the bull calves to £545 for a young British Blue x sold by Mr R M Rundle from Mevagissey who sold another British Blue x bull for £465 and his very young run of Hereford x bulls selling for £465, £460, £440, £430 and £410 then going on to top the heifer section with his British Blue x making £385 and further British Blue x heifers at £350.

His Hereford x heifers to £355 with further Hereford x heifers at £345, £340, £325 and £320 twice. Simmental x bulls to £525 for Messrs L W & S Hosken from Helston who sold another Simmental x bull for £510 and a heifer for £310.

Aberdeen Angus x bulls to £350 for Mr W R Davey from Probus who sold further Aberdeen Angus x bulls at £335 and £310 and their heifer at £295.

Friesian bulls to £170 for Messrs J R, P M & D W Treleaven from Trenarren.

A entry of older 3-4 month old stirks from W P & J Jenkin Ltd from St Martin, Helston sold well with their best British Blue x steer making £705, with a further two British Blue x steers making £700 each and also selling a Hereford x steer for £700 and a bunch of three British Blue x heifers making £575 each.

An entry of 20 stirks mostly 3-5 m.o from Messrs R D & R V Cookson from Nine Maidens sold well with a British Blue x steer at £485 and another at £440 and further steers at £420 and £405 and a bunch of five Aberdeen Angus x heifers flying away at £485 each with another heifer at £405 and a pair at £345 all looking well sold.

Prime Lambs

The overall finished trade has eased on the week, with the live trade following the deadweight pricing; with the overall averages back around £5/head.

This was the case for all but the premium butcher’s heavies, which saw prices fly away to £199 (370p/kg) for a choice 59kg Charollais from Messrs S C R & J F Brake of Mawgan Porth, sold to Stillmans Ltd of Taunton.

Following in the averages for Charollais lambs at the other end of the weight chart for meaty 43.2kg lambs from Mr D J A Eyles, of Ladock, at 366p/kg, purchased by R J Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

A grand run of heavyweights from Messrs H L Banbury & Son of St Ervan, saw their best pick pair at £192, also sold to Stillmans.

Cull Ewes

A decent number forward for the time of year.

The vast majority (80 per cent) were smaller/plainer hill bred types which will have affected the averages.

Texels to £180 this week for Mr R G Hawkey of St Mawgan, Newquay, with Charollais close behind at £174, £157 & £156 for Mr D J A Eyles of Ladock, Truro. Further Texels to £156, £154, £148 for Messrs P J Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn, Truro.

Dorset to £139 for a medium bodied pen from Messrs S C R & J F Brake of Mawgan Porth.

Full mouth wethers to £189 for a pen of Texel x from Mr G Vaughan of Troon, Camborne, and £168 for a pen of Suffolks from Mrs S Tabrett of Newquay.

A single ram forward, being a FM Devon & Cornwall Longwool from Mr W F Teagle of Newquay selling to £149.

Store Lambs

Over 200 store lambs in this week selling on a slightly easier trade though well in line with the finished prices.

Topping this week at £137 was a fleshy single from Mr S Williams of Sennen, Penzance, followed by the choice pen of a strong run from Messrs J J Tredinnick & Son of Perranporth, Newquay at £127.50, with further pens from Messrs Tredinnick achieving £121 and £115.50.

Mr S Tabrett of Colan, Newquay sold a smart single to £126, which was also achieved by Mr E Tuckett of Par, St Austell for his best pen of a large consignment, with further pens from him selling to £112.50, £109.50 twice and £97.

A strong pair from Mr T Watters of Carlean, Helston realised £125.50, whilst pens from Mr D T Burnett of Roche, St Austell and Mr T D Retallack of Talskiddy, St Columb, realised £120.50 and £120 respectively.

Medium Continentals typically trading between £90 and £110, with weaker long-term lambs much harder to place.
