MENHENIOT-Looe Cricket Club is preparing to give cricket’s unsung heroes their moment in the spotlight when it hosts Cornwall’s only official National Cricket Widows Day event.

The event takes place on Saturday (August 15), and will celebrate the wives, partners, mums, families and friends who spend countless hours supporting players from the boundary.

Maria Jordan, of Menheniot-Looe Cricket Club, said the day was about recognising the contribution of those who are often overlooked.

“While the men play on the pitch, we’re getting spoilt,” she said. “We’re the only official host club in Cornwall, so Cricket Widows, Lady Cricketers and Cricket Mums, this is a day for you.”

The celebrations will begin with an afternoon tea in the Willow Garden from 1.30pm, costing £12 with tea or coffee, or £15 including Prosecco or non-alcoholic wine.

The club will then host a barbecue from 7.30pm, followed by a silent disco from 8.30pm, with tickets costing £5.

Organisers say guests can choose which activities they want to attend, with those booking all three paying no more than £20. Children and well-behaved dogs are also welcome.

Maria said the event was intended to shine a light on the people who provide support throughout the cricket season.

“They walk the kit, remember every catch, count the runs, endure the weather and provide the tea, encouragement, lifts and emotional support,” she said. “National Cricket Widows Day is about giving those people their moment.”

Maria said Menheniot-Looe was proud to play its part.

“Our supporters are far more than spectators. They are the backbone of our club,” she said. “We want Cricket Widows from across Cornwall, Devon and beyond to come together for good food, great company and plenty of laughter.”

Free tickets must be registered in advance through The Cricket Widows Club website. Those registering will also be entered into a free prize draw.
