PLANS to create 16 specialised supported homes for adults with disabilities in Liskeard have been supported by town councillors.

Liskeard Town Council’s planning committee considered the application for land at Aries Hill, off Charter Way, at its monthly meeting on September 7.

Councillor Simon Cassidy proposed supporting the scheme, with Cllr David Braithwaite seconding the motion, which was then approved by the committee.

The application by HBV Group would see a two-storey block containing 10 one-bedroom apartments alongside six one-bedroom bungalows, as well as parking, landscaping, open space and a new access road.

The proposed accommodation would be designed for vulnerable adults with disabilities, allowing residents to live independently while receiving support when required.

The plans include 18 parking spaces, two of which would be accessible, cycle storage, communal facilities and private garden areas for the bungalows.

The applicant says the scheme would address an identified need for specialist and supported housing in Cornwall, with the development supported in principle by Cornwall Council’s adult social care commissioning team.

Documents submitted with the application state Cornwall’s Supported and Specialist Housing Strategy estimates a need for around 355 additional units for people with learning disabilities and/or autism by 2033.

The proposals have also been designed to retain existing trees and hedges and respond to the surrounding residential development.

The scheme would be managed by Golden Lane Housing, with on-site support provided by Cornwall-based Kerensa Care and Support.

The applicants say residents would have access to 24-hour support, with accommodation specifically designed to help people develop and maintain their independence.

The project has previously been presented to Liskeard Town Council, with councillors raising concerns about managing construction traffic. Those concerns remain part of the committee’s considerations, although councillors ultimately resolved to support the application.

The final decision on planning permission will be made by Cornwall Council.
