CORNWALL residents have a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes at two of the Duchy’s recycling facilities this September.

As part of Heritage Open Days, Suez Recycling and Recovery UK (SUEZ) is offering rare public access to facilities that are usually closed to visitors, providing free guided tours revealing what happens to household recycling after it leaves the home.

The tours will take place at Bodmin Materials Recycling Facility on Saturday, September 12, as well as at Hallenbeagle Materials Recycling Facility and Refuse Transfer Station in Scorrier on Saturday, September 19.

The Bodmin facility processes around 35,000 tonnes of material each year, making it a vital part of Cornwall's recycling infrastructure in the east of the Duchy.

Whilst visitors to Hallenbeagle will also gain insight into how Cornwall's residual waste and recycling are managed in the west of Cornwall through the site near Redruth.

Attendees will be given an exclusive insight at the technology, expertise and operations that keep Cornwall's recycling system running.

Visitors will see first-hand how paper, cardboard, plastics and metals are separated and prepared for reprocessing, helping to demystify the recycling process and highlight the role residents play in Cornwall's environmental ambitions.

Each visit will include a short safety induction, guided walking tour of the facility and opportunities to ask questions and interact with site staff.

"Many people regularly recycle but rarely get the chance to see what happens next.” said Sarah Cotton, community liaison manager at SUEZ.

“These tours offer a fascinating insight into the journey materials take after collection and the technology and expertise involved in turning recycling into a valuable resource. We hope visitors leave with a greater understanding of the difference their recycling efforts make."
