RESIDENTS and businesses are counting the cost following the damage left in the wake of Storm Goretti.
The coastline areas especially took a battering with properties along the Narrowcliff and Cliff Road damaged by the fierce winds.
Treviglas Academy has closed for the day due to the extensive damage across the site including the inflatable sports dome. A number of other schools have a staggered opening.

A spokesperson said: “Due to the extensive damage to the school site and further widespread disruption Treviglas Academy will be closed today. This decision has not been taken lightly, but it is to ensure all students and staff safety.”

Businesses and residents face major repairs. A crew from Newquay Community Fire Station is at the One Pentire development to keep people away as a number of glass balconies have been blown out and several are loose. Part of Pentire Avenue has been closed.

Properties along Narrowcliff and Cliff Road particularly took a battering. The fascia from a vacant office above the William Hill building in Station Parade has been completely ripped out and the outdoor seating area at the Turkish Kitchen has been destroyed.

Mark Gill from Playland Amusements said: “The area took the brunt of the wind as its so exposed here. It’s like tornado alley.
“A number of properties have taken a battering. The pawnshop has been damaged, windows have been ripped out above The Chippy, the parking indicator sign outside Playland has been destroyed. The fascia has been ripped out in a vacant office above William Hill and further up the outside seating area at the Turkish Kitchen has been ripped apart.”

Hoardings have been ripped away from several buildings including Hotel Victoria. Tiles are scattered around the ground after being
pulled from rooftops.

The Skate by the Sea Ice Rink at Watergate Bay has been closed for the season after the marquee was severely damaged by the high winds.

Will Ashworth, founder and executive director, Watergate Bay Hotel, said: “Storm Goretti caused significant damage to Watergate Bay’s ice rink marquee overnight, and as a result, the rink has had to close a few days earlier than planned.
“We’re very relieved that no one was hurt and that our guests and team remained safe throughout the storm.
“We are now in the process of safely dismantling the rink, and we’re reviewing ice rink bookings. All impacted guests will be contacted directly.
“We would like to say a huge thank you to our teams, who worked with great care in extremely challenging conditions.
“While it’s disappointing to end a little earlier than expected, the ice rink has meant a great deal to our guests and the local community this winter. It’s been a joyful and memorable experience for so many people, and we’re very grateful to our team, partners and guests for their support throughout.”
A spokesperson for the Watergate Bay Hotel said: “Storm Goretti has caused considerable damage to the ice rink marquee at Watergate Bay. It will be closed for the rest of the season. Anyone who has a booking we will contact them directly.”

Several trees were blown over by the strong winds including outside Trenance Learning Academy.

Resident Paul Chambers said: “I moved to Newquay in 1979 and its got to be one of the worst storms since then. I walked along the seafront at Narrowcliff this morning and I’ve not seen damage that bad before.”
