A CENTENARIAN who worked in the West End of London making and designing costumes for shows has had a fine time celebrating her 100th birthday.

Irene Barnes invited 50 friends and relatives to her home in Carlyon Bay, near St Austell, for a party to mark the big occasion.

Among those at the party were Irene’s two sons Trevor and Alan.

Irene was born in north London in September 1926 and worked for several employers as a seamstress before getting work in the West End theatres.

Irene lived in London throughout the Blitz in the Second World War and later moved to Cornwall with her husband Jack who worked as a quantity surveyor in the clay industry.

Irene has already invited guests back for her 101st birthday.
