REVELLERS at a Boardmasters after party being held in Newquay night club had a lucky escape after part of the ceiling collapsed in the early hours of Friday.
Sailors in Fore Street was evacuated after part of the ceiling came down on the top floor that covered the VIP area at about 3.30pm.
The incident happened about 25 minutes before the venue was due to close and an eyewitness stated if the ceiling had come down 10 minutes before people would have been trapped underneath.
A crew from Newquay Fire Station attended the scene and confirmed the electrics were safe.
DJ’s Issey Cross and Disrupta had performed at Sailors earlier in the evening as part of the Boardmasters after party event.
An eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “It was about 25 minutes before Sailors closed and the ceiling of the top dance floor and above the VIP booths just dropped and all the lights went out.
“All the lights and wires were hanging from the ceiling. The whole thing came down in a split second. The building was evacuated, and emergency services arrived very fast.
“It was very, very lucky because if it had happened just 10 minutes earlier, a lot of people would be underneath. It was a close call.”
A spokesperson for Sailors Club said: “A section of the ceiling collapsed last night as the nightclub was closing. Thankfully, no one was injured, and all guests and team members are safe.
“The fire brigade attended as a precaution and confirmed the electrics were safe. We are now working with contractors to repair the damaged area. Sailors Club will reopen once it is fully safe to do so. Sailors Arms Pub is unaffected and will trade as normal. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.”
A Boardmasters after party scheduled to be staged at Sailors on Saturday has been cancelled. The event titled Boardmasters X Cirque Du Soul Presents was due to feature Prozak, King Booo, Jackyboom and Fred Mann.
A spokesperson for Boardmasters said: "We can confirm that there was a partial ceiling collapse at Sailors, Newquay last night.
“The fire service swiftly attended as a precautionary measure and we are pleased to confirm that there were no injuries.
“As a result, we will be cancelling Saturday’s After Party at Sailors and remain in close contact with the venue’s management to understand the cause of this incident. Anyone with tickets to Saturday's After Party will automatically receive a full refund within three to five working days.”
