A GROUP redeveloping a community garden in Newquay is appealing to people to come forward with any historical information about the area.

Crantock Street Community Garden committee is looking for ideas as it plans to bury a time capsule as part of the project.

The committee would particularly like a donation from Newquay Fire Station for the time capsule as the former fire station used to occupy the site up until 1969.

The much-needed garden makeover involves levelling out the site and installing a planting scheme, benches and various planters.

Chairman Anna Jay said: “We have been in touch with Newquay Museum and they have shared some initial information “The site of which the community garden was the old fire station built in c1900, Sheila Harper explained more in her publication 'Newquay Through Time' (2014) as follows: "In 1906, Mr Vivian was Captain of the Fire Brigade. During the Second World War, on 23 April 1941, there was a terrible German bombing raid on Plymouth. The Newquay wartime fire crew went to assist and were killed as they got to Plymouth. Of nine men, all volunteers, five died.

“These were G Cameron, E Old, B Phillips, S Vineer and F Whiting. On the same site as the fire station was Newquay Board School. The school for girls was opened in 1875 and has now been replaced by Treffry Court.

“The fire station was demolished in 1969. Little is known in regards to it becoming a public space and they are looking into this, however a former recorder of the Newquay Old Cornwall Society, Ruth Hurst took many photos of Newquay during the 1960, 1970s and 1980s.

“If anyone has any historical information about the garden, do let us know. We’d also love to have something for the time capsule from Newquay Community Fire Station.”
