THE Met Office has issued a danger to life weather warning for Cornwall during Thursday night.
Storm Goretti is expected to bring a spell of especially strong winds across parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, which will generate 80mph to 90mph gusts in exposed places.
An amber weather warning has been put in place for the southern tip of Cornwall on Thursday night between 5pm and 11pm.
Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Storm Goretti will be a multi-hazard event.
“An Amber warning has been issued where the greatest risk of disruption is likely on Thursday night into Friday morning, though updates may be required as confidence increases in the exact track of Storm Goretti.”
“Amber between 5pm and 11pm. Yellow from 3pm until 6am on Friday, January 9. Combined with large waves this will make the coast more hazardous than normal. Keep up to date with local weather forecasts. Stay safe.”
A spokesperson for Newquay RNLI lifeboats said: “The Met Office has issued an Amber weather warning for wind across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly from 5pm to 11.59pm on Thursday, with Storm Goretti expected to bring very strong and potentially dangerous conditions, particularly along exposed coasts.
“What this means for the coast and sea. Gale to storm-force winds, rapidly changing conditions. Very rough seas, strong surf, and powerful currents.
“Increased risk of waves overtopping coastal paths, harbours, and sea walls. Our advice is to avoid coastal activities such as boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, or swimming.
“Keep well back from cliff edges, harbour walls, and exposed headlands. Do not take risks to watch the storm — conditions can change suddenly and without warning.
“Secure small craft and check moorings if safe to do so before conditions deteriorateIf you see someone in trouble on the coast or at sea, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. These events are often short-lived, but the dangers during peak conditions are very real. Please help us by making sensible choices and sharing this message with others. Stay safe.”
