AIR cadets in Newquay, St Austell and St Blazey are set for a major expansion following a government funding boost.
The new £70-million nationwide 30 by 30 campaign will grow cadet forces by 30 per cent by 2030, creating opportunities for more than 50,000 additional young people across the UK. It delivers on the government’s strategic defence review and forms part of Labour’s Plan for Change to ensure every young person can reach their potential.
For the first time, RAF Cadets will be certified by the Civil Aviation Authority to deliver an industry-recognised qualification in drone piloting – making them the first youth organisation in Britain able to provide this cutting-edge skill. A new National Cadet Champion will also be appointed to raise awareness and encourage more young people and volunteers to get involved.
The package also includes new joint army and air cadet centres, streamlined routes for veterans to become volunteers, and expanded opportunities to develop STEM and cyber skills.
St Austell and Newquay MP Noah Law said: “The cadets offer more than just activities. They give young people the tools to thrive. In St Austell, St Blazey and Newquay, we have huge talent and potential, but too often young people don’t get the same chances as elsewhere.
“This expansion means more of them will be able to gain real qualifications, build confidence, and develop skills that will serve them well in work and in life. I’m looking forward to visiting the St Austell unit this Autumn to hear directly from cadets about the opportunities and experiences the programme gives them.
“Investing in our young people is the best investment we can make for the future of our communities. By supporting the cadets, we’re opening doors to opportunities that can change lives and strengthen the area for years to come.”
Labour’s Minister for Veterans and People, Alistair Carns MP, said: “Every young person deserves the chance to discover their potential, regardless of their postcode or family income.
“The cadet experience doesn’t just build character – it transforms futures, helping young people build confidence, develop skills and meet new people.
“Our Labour government is kickstarting a new era for the cadets through this major expansion, backed by £70 million of extra funding.”
