AN extraordinary few days involving the Poundland store in the centre of St Austell appears to have come to an end, with the news the shop is to remain open.

Shoppers turning up at the prominent store on Fore Street on Thursday morning were confronted with locked doors and bailee notices dated July 16.

The notices said the premises were the property of Nova St Austell 74 and MK SIPP Trustees UK, that no unauthorised person could enter and that a bailee had taken possession of the goods inside.

In response to this, Poundland said it had been “in an ongoing commercial dialogue with the landlord regarding lease terms at St Austell for some time” and it was “bemused by the action to exclude us”.

A Poundland spokesperson told the Voice on Friday that the store was scheduled for closure in September.

Then on Saturday the discount store reopened to shoppers.

On Monday (July 21), the spokesperson, responding to further enquiries from the Voice, said: “I’m pleased to say we’ve come to an agreement with the landlord which is why we reopened over the weekend and the store will not now close in September.”

The Voice has approached representatives of the landlord for comment.
