MOTORISTS are being urged to avoid Goonhavern after a car burst into flames.

A silver Audi caught fire near Goonhavern Garden Centre on the A3075 Newquay Road just before 2pm.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang before thick, black smoke started pouring out of the vehicle.

It is not known if anyone has been injured in the incident. Fire appliances from Newquay Fire Station are attending the scene.

Eyewitness Sara Wing said: “Traffic came to a standstill and I could see thick black smoke. Then I saw flames and heard a loud bang. All cars started turning around. The car was already parked to the side of the curb so I’m not sure if was an accident or not.”

Eyewitness Graham Lamb added: “I am working on a construction site just adjacent to the the incident and I heard a bang and then saw black smoke.”

Another eyewitness said: “The bang was so loud , my son thought it was a gunshot at first.”

Devon and Cornwall Police have been asked for further comment.
