Truro veterans and dignitaries paid their respects on VE Day with a day-long programme of events starting at 8am with the Town Crier’s proclamation on the steps of Truro Cathedral and ending at 10pm with a beacon-lit gathering at High Cross.
Two ceremonies took place at the war memorial in Boscawen Street. Penair School Air Force cadet Rowan Wilding, 14, attended the Truro City Council service at 9am. “I am very proud to be part of this,” he said. “It’s really important to remember those who died.”
At 11am, the Truro Branch of the Royal British Legion presided over wreath-laying and the Last Post. Veteran Kenneth Beaumont, 99, left his mobility scooter to place a wreath “in honour of those who laid down their lives to give us our freedom”.
